GeneralsJoes Reviews IDW’s G.I. Joe: RAH Annual for 2012

The idea of a “Yearbook” or “Annual” seems like almost a thing of the past, especially in the G.I. Joe world, and I was excited to hear that IDW was reviving the concept for the Real American Hero title.  Many of those old school yearbooks were some of the coolest stories going on in the Marvel days.

IDW really dives head long into the whole vintage concept here as well, as they comb the historical archives and pull out some really great art talents to bring this story to life.

Some great sneak preview pages from Real American Hero Annual

With big thanks to IDW Editor Chris Ryall’s “RyallTime Blog” for giving us a GREAT look at some upcoming art for not just the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Annual, but also the cover for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #177.

Going totally old school with artistic geniuses Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, Ron Wagner, and Herb Trimpe, even these few pages are like an awesome walk down memory lane.  Such great retro art that really suits the G.I. Joe classic universe nicely.

Check out the Ryalltime Blog to see all of these great images, I’ve mirrored only a couple of them below.

GeneralsJoes Reviews G.I. Joe: ARAH #166

While the main Joe titles are spearheading the whole Cobra Civil War, the Real American Hero title remains land-locked in the 80’s dynamic, and I couldn’t be happier.  Yes, the whole Sneak Peek gaffe was disappointing, but beyond that hiccup, I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 5 or 6 issues, and Hama has really hit his groove.

Issue #166 was absolutely no exception.

In this issue we see Ron Wagner make a triumphant return to the old school G.I. Joe universe, and I have to be honest…I think I prefer SL Gallant.  But only slightly.  Wagner follows right along in the simple, realistic style that he spearheaded back in the day, and it still fits perfectly on this title.  To read the rest of this review click the Read the Rest of this Entry link below.

Five Page Previews for RAH #166 and Snake Eyes #1

The Cobra Civil War has officially begun, and while I honestly wasn’t wild about the kick off #0 issue, or the initial issue of G.I. Joe, things just might be turning around…  I’m certainly not sold on the whole Snake Eyes/Helix angle, but if these first five pages are any indication, I can overlook that with a fast-paced story and some absolutely awesome Robert Atkins art.

Meanwhile, the old school goodness continues full steam ahead on Real American Hero.  Ron Wagner’s pencils are a sight for sore eyes, though I’ll be honest…I think I like Gallant’s style just a little bit more.  Both of these issues hit your local comic shops tomorrow…can’t wait to check ’em out!

But don’t count COBRA out yet: they have a few more tricks up their sleeve! Featuring Ron Wagner on art, you can’t afford to miss this incredible issue of G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO!
