Yes, we know the episodes have been a little more sporadic lately, but hopefully this four hour marathon makes up for it. We spend a healthy two hours talking to resident toy expert Mark Bellomo about G.I. Joe and the toy industry in general, and complement that great interview with some looks at recent G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club announcements, plus a look back at 2013 and a look ahead to next year.

I would imagine anyone checking out the site here is familiar with Mark Bellomo, notorious G.I. Joe and 80’s toy book author (and great friend of GeneralsJoes). Well, tonight, Mark has surprised the toy collecting community with a veritable arsenal of eBay auctions featuring many items from his personal collection.
But the really remarkable items featured in these auctions are a number of items from the personal collection of Larry Hama, all signed by him! Mark promises more items to come, so keep watching his eBay page for these really unique items and more items to come.
IDW Publishing obviously has some love for the good old days of Marvel’s G.I. Joe title and has gone to great lengths to demonstrate that love.
The Real American Hero continuation has been fantastic, and IDW’s Complete Collection series (working hand in hand with Mark Bellomo) has crafted a really nice all encompassing run of the old Real American Hero titles. IDW has taken this formula to their IDW Limited series as well, and Volume 2 is now up for pre-order!
With their exclusive Black Label, Blue Label, and Red Label offerings in the IDW Limited online store, there is something here for everyone, even featuring some exclusive art by comic legend Russ Heath. I have the pleasure of owning Volume 1 of this great series (which I reviewed right here) and I cannot recommend the IDW Limited collections enough for the discriminating G.I. Joe comic fan.
Thanks to the long hard work by guys like Mark Bellomo, Larry Hama and the talented folks at IDW, the Marvel era of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has never been treated better than it is being treated now. Not just because of the fantastic Real American Hero title that is kicking ass every single month, but also IDW’s pure willingness to go back in time and collect every Marvel issue into one cohesive “Complete Collection”. This Complete Collection includes not just the regular Marvel releases, but the Special Missions, Yearbooks, and even Comic Pack comics, all in chronological order!
Mark has poured his blood, sweat and tears into bringing these titles together, and it really shows. But, you know, if you’re going to invest in a Marvel “Complete Collection” you might as well go all the way. Along with their regular releases, IDW Publishing is also releasing IDW Limited Special Editions featuring the Marvel Complete collection.
I’ve been talking up the G.I. Joe Complete Collection for a while now, and over at the Hasslein Books Blog, James McFadden has uncovered yet another reason to consider picking these collections up. as I’ve mentioned in the past, Mark Bellomo has been doing some exhaustive work drafting these collections and ensuring they are of the highest quality for your G.I. Joe comic dollar. But as further added value, Mr. Bellomo has gone directly to the source, Larry Hama, and has provided some very cool insight that many fans may not have been privy to.
As James points out, an original dossier write up for Destro mentions a converted oil tanker named “The Valkyrie” that served as Destro’s base of operations. This little nugget of information was more or less dropped from Destro’s final iteration, but it did create a very interesting tie-in to the Sunbow animated series.
I won’t spoil the details here, you should head on over to the Hasslein Blog to check out the details.
It’s little stuff like this that makes the Real American Hero universe so compelling, and is just another reason to devour every bit of these Complete Collection books. Still lots to be learned after over 30 years! Hit up the links below to order the Complete Collection from Amazon.
As an added note, you should also definitely check out James McFadden’s excellent comic site, My Useless Knowledge, which has a plethora of information about the G.I. Joe comic universe among other things.
Yes, this is a plug, but please trust me when I say that this plug is a plug for something that I think all G.I. Joe comic fans will enjoy. IDW Publishing has been working alongside Mark Bellomo in developing the “G.I. Joe Complete Collection” which is a collection based assortment, taking stories from the Marvel Comics universe and bringing them all together into one cohesive series of volumes. This includes the Real American Hero main title, the Yearbooks, and Special Missions…and believe it or not, also the “in between” issues from the 25th Anniversary Comic Packs.
At first glance, this may seem like an odd inclusion, as the art and format of the comic packs doesn’t necessarily lend itself to meshing seamlessly with the surrounding issues. But trust me when I say, it actually works really well. Mark is a very good friend of mine, and I know he has been working long and hard putting these volumes together, and as a G.I. Joe fan of three decades, he is really pouring his heart and soul into it, as well as consulting with Larry Hama and others to ensure the format and vehicle is what it deserves to be.
Reviews from folks who actually have the books in hand have been glowing. Don’t miss out. Both volumes 1 and 2 are available at Amazon.com right now, with Volume 3 on the way soon. Hit the banners below to pick these up!
G.I. Joe fans, by and large, seem to love the Marvel Comics continuity, and who am I to argue? Good friend of GeneralsJoes Mark Bellomo has been working very long and very hard on the composition, layout, and format of these complete collections, and I’m excited to say that Volume 2 is on the verge of release.
It’s actually listed from Amazon as “In Stock”, so grab it while it’s hot! It collects the entirety of the Marvel Universe IN PROPER ORDER including issues from Comic Pack releases. Very cool stuff. Click the banner below to pick one of these up.
Yes, it’s been a while since we’ve posted an episode of What’s on Joe Mind, but hopefully we’ve made up for it with the length of this one! Clocking in at just over three hours, there’s enough G.I. Joe conversation here to keep any Joe fan satisfied.
We talk to legendary toy expert Mark Bellomo and winner of the What’s on Joe Mind Fantasy Football league (and operator of the awesome GIJoeGraphy site) Dan Uthman.

A project that has been listed on Amazon for a while, but with a release date that sort of kept jumping around has been volume 1 of the G.I. Joe: The Complete Collection hardcover series by IDW. The goal of the series is to reprint every page of every comic from the Marvel era of G.I. Joe…and yes, this includes (for the first time in trade paperback form) the fantastic “Hot Potato” backup story from issue #1 as well as all of the pin ups and dossiers from those issues, too!
Volume 1 contains issues #1 – 12 which collect the absolute essential foundation of the Marvel G.I. Joe universe as we know it. Dr. Venom, Snake Eyes, Kwinn, the Brainwave Scanner, Billy…it all started right here.
Amazon has this initial volume in stock now at a very reasonable price…and you can rest assured, with these titles being assembled by none other than G.I. Joe uber-fan Mark Bellomo, there is great care and consideration going into them. Hit up the banner below to buy this title and start your “complete collection” of the Marvel G.I. Joe universe!
IDW has just supplied us with solicitation information for G.I. Joe titles hitting comic shops in September! I’ll tell you I’m extremely excited to see what’s going to happen in the Real American Hero universe based on what we’re seeing here, which features a fan favorite character… a couple of them, actually.
Also, even thought it’s not strictly G.I. Joe related, I was excited to see a Transformers: Art of Fall of Cybertron collection featuring art from the extremely cool video game series…not only that, but written by long time G.I. Joe scribe and personal friend of GeneralsJoes Mark Bellomo! That should be a great item to check out come September. Also in September begins the “G.I. Joe Complete Collection” series which endeavors to gather together all of the Marvel G.I. Joe issues into a series of comprehensive volumes! That should be a fantastic collection to keep an eye out for as well.
Check out the Read the Rest of this Entry link below to see the full blown solicitation list.
