IDW Publishing Solicitations gives first look at post Revolution G.I. Joe

Although IDW’s Revolution storyline kicks off in September, the first G.I. Joe book spinning out of that event releases in October.  IDW Publishing just sent out the solicitation information for October, so, as one might expect, some new tidbits about G.I. Joe’s new direction can be found within.

Below I’m posting any relevant G.I. Joe solicitations as well as the Revolution comic itself, considering any potential tie ins with the main Joe title.  Obviously Hama’s Real American Hero comic is chugging right along as well!  Check out all the details below.

Variant covers for IDW’s Revolution #1 revealed

Comic Book Resources has revealed images from the upcoming variant covers for IDW Publishing’s “Revolution” series.  There are five variants to the first issue, and the article also includes an amazing piece of art by John Byrne,  Something about seeing Byrne draw a handful of G.I. Joe characters just gives me a warm feeling, and I gotta admit, I’m quickly warming up to seeing MASK and the Joes running alongside each other.  I may be slowly getting on board this whole shared universe train.

Check out the full details at Comic Book Resources, and the mirrored images below.

Big kudos to Adam Riches for his contribution – the cover with a toy homage to Optimus Prime and Scarlett.  Looks pretty boss, Adam!

IDW Publishing’s “Revolution” revealed!

UPDATE – I reached out to Chris Ryall, editor at IDW to inquire about A Real American Hero, and he confirmed that this title will be “untouched by the #IDWRevolution”.  Great news!

Ryall-ARAH

Well, I’m not generally one to pat myself on the back, but…

For a while, IDW Publishing has been promoting a mysterious “Revolution”, hinting at some major storyline or paradigm shift with their comics, and sure enough, Entertainment Weekly brings news that this “Revolution” happens in September.

A short while ago, I posited that this rumored “Revolution” would potentially feature an alignment of IDW’s Hasbro properties, and indeed that looks to be what’s happening here.

Revolution is a five-part biweekly series which brings the Hasbro universes together, and as a result of this coming together, the M.A.S.K. title will be born.

Now, all of this doesn’t come without its share of risks.  According to editor Chris Ryall, all titles are going to be relaunched with new #1 issues, though Ryall also stresses that this is NOT a reboot.  The universes are coalescing in new ways, but past history is not just being wiped away here.

I think this is a fascinating concept, and may hopefully provide some insight into what Hasbro might be attempting with their huge cinematic universe initiative.  We’ll see how successful things are.  To me, the real question is whether Real American Hero is going to reset, or whether this will be the birth of a new main line G.I. Joe #1.  These are questions I’m going to work to find the answers to, but for now, it seems like an interesting and exciting concept, and I’ll be eagerly anticipating the results in September.

Check out the full article with a great interview with Chris Ryall over on Entertainment Weekly.

My hope is to actually get a review of this one posted, too, because it’s a pretty fun issue which actually does something really interesting…

Is the Hasbro shared universe starting sooner than we thought?

The stories emerged a while ago that Hasbro was developing their own cinematic shared universe as a way to develop their in house brands and further their entertainment strategy.  In fact, just before Toy Fair 2016, a shareholder presentation revealed this fact, and focused specifically on a potential cinematic universe featuring G.I. Joe, MASK, Visionaries, ROM, and Micronauts.  How these diverse properties will all blend together remains a question, but is it possible that this question may be answered sooner than some of us thought?

If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you’ve likely noticed that IDW Publishing has been promoting something called “Revolution”.  Nobody really seems to know what it’s about, but something is evidently in the works.

01-IDW-Revolution

Now today, from all over social media, various comic creators, writers, etc… are Tweeting about a creative summit to discuss this “Revolution”.  You can see a collection of these Tweets over at Bleeding Cool.

So, evidently, IDW is doing something interesting in advance of Free Comic Book Day and calling it “Revolution”.  Pretty innocuous, right?

Well, let’s connect some dots.  Not too long ago, IDW was rumored to be working on a MASK Comic Book.  IDW is already working on Micronauts and just recently announced the debut of a new ongoing ROM title.

Do you see where this is going?

Several of the creators traveling to this Revolution creative summit are creators who have been involved in some of these Hasbro properties, or are rumored to be involved.

Along with this, you have the apparent debut of a new Action Man (a European extension of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe), and his appearance is apparently in a Free Comic Book day special featuring ROM (which is happening right around this supposed “Revolution”).

As if this isn’t enough, there have been a swath of exclusive covers revealed, showcasing ROM cavorting with all sorts of different Hasbro themed characters.

So with all of this coming together, it seems possible that this “Revolution” might just feature the seeds of this big Hasbro shared universe.

Now, would Hasbro really utilize the IDW comics to kick off this grand scheme?  Honestly, I’m not convinced of that, but there are certainly a lot of coincidences here that lead me to believe we’ll be seeing some coalescence between brands, and that coalescence may begin with the comic pages before it graces the movie screen.

We’ll have to see what these events might mean for G.I. Joe, whether Real American Hero carries that torch, or if IDW might spin up another solo Joe book.

Or, who knows, I may just be full of complete crap.  As long as I get a cool MASK and Visionaries series to go along with it, I’m okay either way.
