Eight days until G.I. Joe: Retaliation and reason 8 why it’ll be great!

I’m sure Twitziller along with myself, realizes that the release date for Retaliation has shifted, but sticking with the theme is the only way to do this thing…see it all the way through to the end.  And speaking of the end, I think we all realize one of the climactic battles of the film will involve the Ripsaw tank and HISS Tanks going at it, and this is what Twitziller talks about today!

#8:

How awesome is that shot?  I’ve seen every teaser, every TV spot, and every trailer so far, and seen them multiple times, but I never really picked that particular scene out.  I’m glad Twitziller did.  Holy crap if that  doesn’t accentuate the cool factor of vehicle battle in this film, I don’t know what does.

State of the art vehicular technology, rolling over land, hurling raw power at each other.  Yeah, that looks amazing, and it’s truly an overlooked piece of the G.I. Joe mythology.  This scene looks like it’s going to be a blast!

Additional details and images on G.I. Joe: Retaliation movie vehicles

Over on HissTank.com poster TheGabrielAngel has posted some updates in regards to the G.I. Joe: Retaliation reshoots, specifically information regarding the vehicles.  I do think some of this needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because he doesn’t list any specific sources.  The images certainly look authentic, I just wish he would state where this information came from.

First and foremost, the following information was revealed about the film in relation to the vehicles:

“To satisfy the cravings of the toy enthusiasts and action-genre fans, the film is chock full of souped-up vehicles that the G.I. JOE brand is known for and an elaborate cache of diverse weaponry sure to be fun for fans. For Luke Freeborn, the vehicles art director, it brings out the kid in everyone. “Creating these giant toys and making them come to life is like being a kid all over again. We were all giddy with anticipation to see them actually put to work,” he says.

The film features a wide array of weapons and vehicles that included two different kinds of tanks, three different helicopters, two different kinds of planes, a souped-up motorcycle, swords, knives, sais and other weapons. Said di Bonaventura, “Bringing these toys to life makes you feel like a kid again and I think people are going to be thrilled seeing something they’ve never seen before.”
When first creating the vehicles, the team was very mindful to push the envelope while still honoring the G.I. JOE legacy. “The directive has always been to make the vehicles as real and formidable as possible with dynamic silhouettes,” says Freeborn. “We strove to incorporate some of the toy language that we’re familiar with and hope to see.”

One such toy incorporated into the film is the COBRA AIR BOAT. This massive and ominous looking boat is loosely based on the water moccasin toy with added elements that included twin engines, counter-rotating blades and enough horsepower to push it across dry land.

Inspired by another classic G.I. JOE/Hasbro toy and sure to excite fans from every age group, the film features a new version of the iconic COBRA HISS TANK. To create this massive vehicle the production team started with a M548 base that took 12 weeks to build before adding the outer shell and flourish of a cockpit and extra weaponry. Vehicles art director Luke Freeborn explains that, “our biggest challenge was figuring out exactly how all of it would go together, how the base would work with the top and how it would be shaped together. We thought about the aesthetics of it and how to make it look scary and formidable. It was a true team effort to then make sure that the guns, tracks and steering all work and perform on camera.”

A significantly smaller but faster tank seen in the film is the Joe Colton tank that ROADBLOCK uses to mow down his enemies. Although seemingly less formidable than the HISS TANK, the Joe Colton tank’s power comes in its speed and agility. Considered to go as fast as a ZR1 Corvette in the grass, the Colton tank has 750 horse power and can go up to 65 mph. In addition, the tank is outfitted with rocket launchers as well as a 100 lbs. 50 cal mounted on top that the ROADBLOCK character utilizes in a show of his great ingenuity and physical strength.

The production team made a great effort to design each character’s weapons to compliment their individual fighting styles and strengths. Not one to shy away from hand-to-hand combat, ROADBLOCK was given special accessories that were incorporated into his wardrobe. “ROADBLOCK has specially designed brass knuckles attached to the vest that could split your skull and have the ability to attach onto different weapons. With the combination of the weaponry and fighting style you’re really able to see his raw brutality,” explains Dwayne Johnson.

To differentiate the ninjas and their skills, each character was outfitted with a specific sword and way in which they were incorporated into their costumes. “The weapons of the ninjas were especially fun because we tried to define how each of them is different,” explains Jon M. Chu. “JINX has 2 swords on one side, STORM SHADOW has two swords on two sides and SNAKE EYES has 1 sword which helped distinguish which ninja was who from the profile.”

Even more challenging, however, may be creating an action figure that lives up to the characters seen in the film. “I don’t know if they have enough plastic to fill out how cut the real ROADBLOCK is,” jokes Chu. “I’m not sure they’ll be able to give it enough action movements because Kung-Fu grip is not enough for this one. They’ll need to up the ante with the capability to body slam as well as a neck breaker and sleeper hold.”

Along with the text, a handful of images were posted as well, featuring vehicles and characters, some images that we’ve seen before.  Still, I’ll take any excuse to get talking about G.I. Joe: Retaliation again!  Check out the original HissTank thread here, and the mirrored images below.

GeneralsJoes reviews the SDCC Exclusive “Shockwave” HISS Tank

In celebration of San Diego ComicCon, which is quickly approaching, I completed my review of the soon to be released SDCC Exclusive “Shockwave” HISS Tank!  Kindly supplied by Hunter PR and Hasbro, I was extremely fortunate enough to get my hands on this a couple of days early so you SDCC attendees know what you’re getting into and why you’re waiting in that six hour line!

Check out the review on my 25th Anniversary Page, and also at the direct link below.  I know this doesn’t really belong in the 25th Anniversary necessarily, I’m still struggling to find a place.

Yetibrew releases modified HISS Tank canopy with clear windows

A short while ago I talked up Yetibrew Design’s awesome custom HISS Tank canopies that many collectors seemed eager to get in their hot little hands.  Well, Ian over at Yetibrew has been listening to some feedback, and invariably people were asking for an updated HISS canopy that the driver could see through!

Here it is!

The great thing about a small operation is that they take all customer feedback to heart, and Ian did a great job turning this item around so quickly.  Check out a small gallery of this new canopy below and hit up Yetibrew to grab yourselves some!  The full updated information is quoted below:

“Late last month I was approached by someone who wanted their canopy to have clear windows so I have created two options for collectors who would prefer to have windows instead of the armored look.  The first option pertains to the material choices available for the original canopies on Shapeways. Users can now select from several transparent and frosted materials that will allow users to paint around the windows to match color of their tanks.  The second option is a two part assembly where the windows are a separate piece which is ordered separately from the canopy frame.  As of yesterday, canopy frames are available for both the RAH and 25th Anniversary HISS tanks and the window insert is universal. “

Very cool.

PoC HISS Tank color change coming down the pipe?

So as I filter through the pictures coming out of SDCC from Toy News International, something strikes me.

The Pursuit of Cobra HISS seen here.

That thing is black.  Like totally black.  Like just how the fan’s wanted to see it totally black.  Very interesting.  Running change?  Another release?  Trick of the light?  Hopefully folks attending SDCC can get us some answers.

The Pursuit of Cobra HISS Tank blows my mind

Why?  Why did it take so long to get this idea right?  And why, right when the G.I. Joe design team is absolutely kicking ass, will we be migrating back over to yet another G.I. Joe theme with G.I. Joe: Renegades in 2011?

I mean, seriously.  The Pursuit of Cobra is like the essence of everything that is awesome about G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.  Real world, gritty military action, mixed with futuristic science fiction, yet fantasy that’s not too separated from the realm of reality.  It’s nearly a perfect mixture of military and fantasy.  I know we’ve already seen a healthy helping of images of the upcoming Cobra HISS Tank from the Pursuit of Cobra line, but for some reason these new images from AC Toys just make me all the giddier about it.  The sleek, armored “speedster” look, the fully multifunction upper body with the multitude of cannon turrets and twin canopies.  This thing is INSANE.

I’m not a huge fan of the brown, and that HISS Driver does absolutely nothing for me, but the vehicle itself is one of the coolest toys I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Pursuit of Cobra HISS and Mech Images posted online

Yes, I’m still in the midst of convention decompressing and gathering information together to get posted, but I just had to get this nugget out there, since I think a lot of fans will love checking out these images.

Gyre-Viper of HissTank.com posted a metric ton of pictures of recently acquired HISS Tank as well as both the G.I. Joe and Cobra Mech Suits for the upcoming Pursuit of Cobra line.  Yes, they are as sick as you think they are, especially that HISS.  Amazing stuff.  The thread can be found here, and I’ve mirrored nearly three dozen pics below as well.

In an effort to tie this back in to the convention, too, I did want to just take a minute and say one of the highlights of the Con for me was getting a chance to meet and interact with Gyre-Viper as he prowled the sales floor or the hallways of the hotel.  I’ve seen my fair share of fans from all walks of life, and many of those fans I run into who buy the pre-production items have a craving to be “first”, to wear it like some sort of badge of honor.  But Gyre-Viper has a palpable thirst for knowledge, an amazing respect for the G.I. Joe brand, and a healthy desire to see G.I. Joe succeed, which drives him to collect the way he does.  He obviously has a deep appreciation for what the toys are all about now, but he also is extremely fascinated with how the production process happens, and with the history of G.I. Joe over the past twenty-eight years.

It was a blast meeting with him and shooting the breeze for a little while, and it always excites me when someone who hasn’t been around all that long can motivate other folks to get excited for the product, and who has an obvious energy himself.

Gyre-Viper, you da man!  Keep it up, bud.

Another picture of the mystery HISS Tank on ACToys…

The plot thickens…

Recently a few images of a mysterious chrome plated HISS Tank had sprouted up on ACToys.net.  Initially thought to be a custom, we now have another image posted which would certainly seem to indicate these are at least at some level of production.

Granted, these could still be customs, just somehow produced on a larger scale…  just seems interesting.  Time will tell.  Check out the thread here.  Thanks as usual to HissCommander of The Terror Drome for the heads up.

Updated info from latest Nintendo Power magazine

Thanks to Shin Densetsu of HissTank.com for providing a lot more information about the upcoming Rise of COBRA video game.  The latest issue of Nintendo Power apparently has some more details that we hadn’t previously been aware of.

Click here to see the full details of what he had to say, including mention of characters like Night Creepers, Stalker, Red Ninjas, and B.A.T.’s.  Also mentioned are the vehicles Crimson Attack Tank, Flight Pod, HISS Tank and Snowcat.

Keep in mind I also had a pretty exhaustive rundown here on GeneralsJoes with all of the different information taken from the Toy Fair demo.
