Recap of the Transformers/G.I. Joe double feature Sunbow-Con

Over the weekend, an exciting opportunity for fans in the LA area emerged when it was announced that the Egyptian, a theater in Los Angeles, was going to be showing G.I. Joe: The Move and Transformers: The Movie as an animated double feature.  Along with the films themselves, many of the creative team would be in attendance as well, featuring voice actors, writers, and directors.

Several folks from the online community were in attendance including Diana from the G.I. Joe Discussion Group on Facebook, who was spreading the Duke love and handing out JoeDeclassified postcards to passer by’s.  Comic expert and veteran Josh was there as well.  From all reports, it was a fantastic time, with this being only the second time in history that G.I. Joe: The Movie was seen in a theater.  It was a unique opportunity to see these two films surrounded by the folks responsible for them, and also share some G.I. Joe and Transformers love with fellow fans.

Diana has posted several images and a video from the event, so please check out some of those below.  Over on Facebook, Sunbow writer Flint Dille is also calling upon folks to push for a sequel to this event, so throw some support his way, too.  Looks like a fun time was had by all!

New G.I. Joe: Retaliation footage to be unveiled during the Super Bowl!

It started innocently enough…a Tweet from G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M Chu asking the following:

“Dear #GIJoeRETALIATION fans…. get ready…….”

Ready for what?  Ready, apparently, for a trailer launch during the biggest television spectacle of the year!

According Jon Chu on Twitter, we WILL be seeing a new trailer on TV during the Super Bowl on Sunday!  Patriots football and a new G.I. Joe trailer?  I may just pass out from awesomeness on Sunday.

Add Larry Houston to my list of personal heroes

If you’ve been watching cartoons for any length of time, chances are the name Larry Houston at least looks familiar.  He’s had his hands in several epic animated series throughout the past three decades including X-Men, COPS n Crooks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman: The Animated Series, Exosquad… yeah, the list is huge.

So what makes him such a hero all of a sudden?

Just this:

Yes, according to a panel at this past weekend’s PowerCon, Larry Houston was the storyboard artist who designed the entire opening sequence to G.I. Joe: The Movie.  Widely regarded as perhaps the greatest three minutes in G.I. Joe animated history, Mr. Houston was apparently surprised and very pleased that the final animated version came back so close to his storyboard.

I think it’s safe to assume all G.I. Joe fans are just as pleased.  A big thanks to the Twitter account of Joe A Day for relaying this cool bit of information.

G.I. Joe: The Movie hits TODAY on DVD and Blu-Ray!

A scant twenty-three years after it’s initial broadcast, the infamous G.I. Joe: The Movie hits retail shelves today on Blu-Ray or DVD.  Produced by Shout! Factory, the movie finally rounds off the long awaited process many fans have gone through waiting for the entire collection of Sunbow features to be released to mass retail on DVD.

The ’87 animated movie will forever be a point of contention and talking point among the G.I. Joe fandom, so don’t miss your chance to own this DVD today.

GeneralsJoes will be reviewing this in its entirety very shortly, but trust me when I say it’s worth a look.  It holds up surprisingly well over two decades after it initially aired.  Granted, I thought it was pretty damn cheesy back then, and these days I’ve learned to better appreciate the finer arts of Sunbow ham, but I still don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  If for nothing else, Buzz Dixon’s excellent commentary.

Pick up your copy today!

You could produce the trailer for G.I. Joe: The Movie on Blu-Ray!

I’ve been promoting the Blu-Ray release of G.I. Joe: The Movie pretty heavily, just because I think it’ll be awesome to see some Sunbow action in high def.  But now Shout! Factory has given another reason to get excited about it.  They’re launching a fantastic contest where some enterprising Joe fan will get the chance to design and produce the trailer for the upcoming Blu-Ray release of G.I. Joe: The Movie!

Announced on, the idea is that fans (or anyone, really) can submit their own trailer for G.I. Joe: The Movie, and the winning entry will be the actual, official trailer for the film.  Very cool contest.  I’ve messed around with trailer making before, but I’m not sure I’ll have time to do something like this.  Who knows, though.

You can click the previous link for a rundown of all the rules, or simply click the “Read the rest of this entry” link, and I’ll mirror the rules right there.

featuring new transfers from hi-def masters, extensive bonus content, the special collectors edition fills the final placeholder inside the g.i. joe: a real american hero – the complete series deluxe footlocker case

After countless defeats at the hands of the G.I. JOE team, the ruthless COBRA organization has taken a drastic leap towards global domination by joining the ranks of the ancient race of COBRA-LA. When DUKE falls in the line of duty, it’s up to SGT. SLAUGHTER, LT. FALCON, SNAKE EYES and the rest of the G.I. JOE team to prevent SERPENTOR, DESTRO and COBRA-LA’s GOLOBULUS from releasing a deadly spore into the Earth’s atmosphere and devolving the human race.

On July 27, 2010, the original animated G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – THE MOVIE that has been long out of print will finally debut for the first time in a 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD combo pack as a Special Collectors Edition from Shout! G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – THE MOVIE Special Collector’s Edition

A 40,000-year-old race of snake people resurface, and with help of SERPENTOR, DESTRO, BARONESS and DR. MINDBENDER, they plan to eliminate all of mankind and rebuild COBRA-LA. Once rulers of Earth, the Snake people were driven underground by ice-age temperatures. While in exile, they developed a plant whose spores turn ordinary men into mindless, weak animals. The key to their plan is the G.I. JOE team’s secret project – the Broadcast Energy Transmitter. Only this device generates enough heat so that the spores can mature. Humankind’s very existence depends on the G.I. JOE team, but are they strong and smart enough to fight a warrior race with 40,000 years of experience?

  • Audio commentary with story consultant Buzz Dixon
  • The final 8 “Knowing Is Half The Battle” PSAs that were not on the G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – The Complete Series DVD box set.

More amazing information on upcoming G.I. Joe: The Movie Blu-Ray release

TV Shows on DVD is reporting that Brian Ward, Shout! Factory producer who is working on the G.I. Joe: The Movie release has posted the following information on Shout!s official message boards:

“The Blu-ray release will be a BD/DVD combo.  The BD will carry both widescreen and fullframe versions of the movie.  The DVD will only have the original fullframe.

Sadly, neither is captioned or subtitled.”

Am I the only one who is giddy about this?  Granted, G.I. Joe: The Movie is the ultimate in Sunbow zaniness, but for some reason seeing it in widescreen Blu Ray format just has me excited.  Just look at this, and imagine it in widescreen Blu Ray:

Unfortunately he did say he still couldn’t talk about bonus materials, but by the looks of things, we’ll hear something soon.  Combine this with the Season 2 release on April 27th, and there’s some great class Joe goodness on the way.

Cobra La in HD…who could ask for anything more?

We’ve already heard that G.I. Joe: The Movie is hitting Blu Ray Disc format, so you can enjoy the beauty of insect creatures Cobra La in high definition…but now, thanks to The Terror Drome and we’ve got actual dates and prices!

If you pre-order the Blu Ray from Amazon, it retails for $15.99, while the standard edition DVD is $11.99, and both have release dates of July 27th, 2010.  Shout! Factory promises to have a wealth of special features included with the release, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled here for all the latest news nuggets on the movie.

Bring yours home in a ditty bag…a little, bitty, ditty bag…

G.I. Joe: The Movie to get Blu-Ray treatment!

In what was one of the most unexpected turns in recent G.I. Joe animation news, Shout! Factory has revealed that the much maligned Sunbow production of G.I. Joe: The Movie will see release in High Definition Blu-Ray Disc format!

While there are plenty of things to not like about the movie, I still think it was a lot of fun for what it was, and greatly look forward to seeing it again in great quality.  The information comes from the Twitter Feed of Shout! Factory rep Brian Ward.

In celebration, embedded below are some of the great parts from G.I. Joe: The Movie…the rest are posted after the jump.
