Preview for IDW Publishing G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files #9

Well, this is it.  The very last issue of Mike Costa’s amazing take on the modern G.I. Joe universe.  A twisted tale of intrigue, drama, and deep characterization, the Cobra (and thus, the Cobra Files) have helped redefine how the G.I. Joe universe as a whole is conceived.

Bug kudos to Costa, Gage, and Antonio Fuso who helped steer this ship from the very beginning.  The preview for this landmark issue is below.  Be sure to pick it up at comic shops tomorrow and see how it all ends.

More clarification from Mike Costa on the end of G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files

G.I. Joe comic fans were blindsided this afternoon when IDW’s December solicitations labeled The Cobra Files as its “final issue”. Widely regarded as one of the fan favorite titles of the IDW universe, Costa’s “Cobra” title dips into the murky depths that many other writers have been unwilling (or unable) to approach. There is a certain depth and design to the Costa universe (which was developed thanks to the expert assistance of co-creator Christos Gage and artist Antonio Fuso) that made these characters feel more real and very deeply flawed.

Yes, this is a good thing.

Questions immediately arose today with the announcement of the title’s cancellation, and it turns out, everything is simply going according to plan. Mike Costa fired up his Twitter account and spoke out about the wrap up of G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files.

“Yes, the final issue of COBRA FILES is 9. That may seem premature, but I’ve been building to this for two years – long before the relaunch”

“I want to thank IDW and Hasbro for letting me end this run the way I always intended. And it’s not the last you’ll see of me in the Joeverse”

“Some characters’ stories will end FOR EVER. Some characters will show up in other books. Some of those books will be written by me.”

So it sounds like there are other plans for Costa’s characters and his writing throughout IDW’s G.I. Joe universe, and I suppose if the Cobra title had to end, I’m happy it ended on Costa’s terms and on his time table. Knowing what we do about Costa’s past work, its obvious he’s not afraid to make some waves with his story and his characters, so I think it’s safe to say we’re in for an exciting and bumpy ride over the next few months. A perfect conclusion to a terrific book.

I still don’t quite understand how Mike Costa did it, but somehow he took one of my least liked elements of the IDW universe (the prevalence of “green shirt” characters) and twisted it all around into something interesting. Clockspring has quickly become a deeply layered character central to the Cobra Files mythology, and I find myself wanting to tune into this title every month to see what he’s going to do next. Right? Not Flint, not Lady Jaye, not even Chameleon or Tomax. Friggen Clockspring.

Go figure.

GeneralsJoes Reviews IDW’s G.I. Joe: Cobra Files #2

I’ve been pretty clear that my favorite ongoing G.I. Joe title at the moment is Larry Hama’s Real American Hero title, mostly because it manages to capture the nearly perfect combination of goofy fantasy and military action from the great 80’s series.

It is for this reason that I continue to be astounded at how much I love Mike Costa’s Cobra (and now the Cobra Files) series.  It’s pretty much the polar opposite of a traditional G.I. Joe book, diving deep into the murky under belly of the current military machine, yet every month I find myself totally captivated by the stories told here.  Even more amazing to me is the fact that Costa uses characters that there are no toys for (Ronin, the IDW Firewall, and to a point, Chameleon) and yet I still love it.  Normally no toys for the characters in the book I’m reading is usually a knock against it.  Not this time, though.

GeneralsJoes Reviews IDW’s The Cobra Files #1

I was hoping to get this review posted yesterday, but just didn’t quite have the time.  New comic day hit Wednesday and with new comic day came the first issue of the next generation of the “Cobra” universe from IDW!  Like The Who says “…meet the new boss… same as the old boss”.

But personally, even if this new iteration is more or less the same, I couldn’t be happier.  Click the Read the Rest of the Review link below for the full review.  BEWARE, SPOILERS for this issue will not be concealed!

Comic Book Resources takes a peek at upcoming Cobra Files from IDW

Coming up Wednesday, we get our first look at G.I. Joe: Special Missions (not to mention issue #2 of the main G.I. Joe title), but as of right now, we are also getting our first glimpse into the mind of Mike Costa as we prepare for The Cobra Files, IDW’s upcoming next iteration of the Cobra title that’s been running for several years.

Continuing the adventures of Flint, Lady Jaye, Chameleon, Ronin, and the whole secret Black Ops division of G.I. Joe, Cobra Files takes the Joe universe in ways that folks might not expect.  And don’t expect any more punches pulled this time around either.

Mike Costa puts out a fantastic interview, and we get a peek at some preview pages as well, including the return of a classic Cobra character!  Check out all the details on Comic Book Resources.

IDW G.I. Joe solicitations for June, 2013

I love these solicitations… it’s great to take a look into the future and see what’s coming from IDW Publishing in the coming months, especially with this new “generation” of G.I. Joe, so to speak.  IDW Publishing has released their solicitations for June, 2013, which covers some very cool looking books from the G.I. Joe title, Special Missions, Cobra Files, and of course G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.

Excellent stuff to look forward to.  Click the “Read the Rest of the Story” link below to see the full list of solicitations.
