G.I. Joe Convention 2013 Hasbro Panel Recap

Good afternoon from Indianapolis, and welcome to the 2013 G.I. Joe Convention Hasbro Seminar coverage!

I’m sure the news is out there by now that Hasbro did not bring any new product or new concepts to reveal at this year’s convention. While this has caused some concern among the fandom, rest assured, things are not DOA and the line is not in dire straits.

The early positive buzz from the G.I. Joe: Retaliation film has already encouraged Paramount to green light a third film, and Hasbro is reacting to that as we speak. The results have driven Hasbro to greatly increase production for Wave 3 and 4 product, and placed those orders to their factories. As a result of the increased production requests, unfortunately the release of Wave 3 will be pushed back slightly from May, 2013 to late July or August, 2013. The pessimist would say that this is a bad thing, but personally I’d rather wait an extra 4 – 6 weeks to ensure that enough product is made and distributed to ensure allocation to everyone who wants it.

GeneralsJoes Reviews discount store “running change” Cobra Commander

First of all, a big thanks to Chief over at JoeCustoms.com for the Cobra Commander hook up!  I was running towards the end of this daily review trend leading up to G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and this figure arrived just in the nick of time!  Then my hands were so jittery from the excitement of seeing G.I. Joe: Retaliation tonight I could barely type.

Oh, the humanity!

Regardless, the review is done and posted in the 30th Anniversary section, or you can hit the direct link below.  Thus wraps up my Discount Store “Running Change” versions of these figures.  NEXT!

GeneralsJoes Reviews Discount Store “Running Change” Storm Shadow

I plowed through the first four of these figures pretty quickly, but the last two have kind of been in limbo due to availability (or lack thereof).  Big thanks to friend of the site Loc, who lent me his Storm Shadow so I was able to get this review done during my “Road to Retaliation” event!

I can’t believe the road is ending this week.

Check out the review on my 30th Anniversary page, or just take a peek at the direct link below.  One thing that became perfectly clear during the review of this figure…  I need a new vintage T’Ginzu!  Yellow-city.

Images added to Discount Store Duke and Cobra Trooper Reviews

A couple of folks had questions about certain elements of the two reviews I mentioned above, so I took a couple extra pictures to show case some things.  People were inquiring about the look of Breaker using Duke’s body, so I whipped something up really quickly.  I did the best I could without cutting off his belt.  I also did a comparison image with recent Cobra Troopers that folks had been asking for.

Check out the two reviews to see the images at the links below, or the images are also mirrored in this story:

GeneralsJoes Reviews the Discount Store exclusive “Running Change” Cobra Trooper

Moving full steam ahead on the discount store exclusive reviews!  I’ve already covered Snake Eyes, Duke, and Shipwreck… today we tackle the Cobra Trooper!  Is this a comic deco?  Cartoon deco?  A little of both?  Read the review to find out!

Check out my 3oth Anniversary Review Page, or click the direct link below to take a look.

GeneralsJoes Reviews Discount Store “Running Change” Shipwreck

The Road to Retaliation continues with my daily reviews, and we start off this Monday morning with the “Running Change” version of Shipwreck!  The Navy soldier dons green and brings the fight on land!  Check out the latest review on my 30th Anniversary Review page, or just by hitting the link below.

GeneralsJoes reviews Discount Store “Running Change” Duke

Continuing on with the “running change” versions of those exclusive figures that came out last year is Duke!  This Duke is a dark gray instead of the green that we got last year.  If I didn’t know better, I’d almost think they were going for a Sunbow version of Breaker homage.

Take a look for yourself and decide!  Hit up my 30th Anniversary Review Page, or go to the direct link below.

GeneralsJoes Reviews Discount Store “Running Change” Snake Eyes

I remember like it was yesterday… the frantic post-G.I. Joe: Retaliation meltdown where everyone was convinced G.I. Joe was dead, the Dollar General exclusives were getting recalled, truly Deth of teh line!11!  Here we are a little less than a year later with a good chunk of pretty cool product to look forward to.  Included in that product is the “running change” versions of the aforementioned Dollar General figures.  So far being spotted in places like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, these figures promise to be a bit more available than the previous ones.

I was able to get my hands on Snake Eyes, and you can either check out the review on my 30th Anniversary Review Page or the direct link below.

Discount “Dollar General” G.I. Joe figures available for pre-order online!

Well, this certainly comes as a surprise.  Online retailers Big Bad Toy Store and Entertainment Earth have both opened up pre-orders for the now legendary “Dollar General” G.I. Joe figures.  Based on the images shown, they appear to be the original decos and NOT the “running change” versions, but I’m thinking perhaps we shouldn’t take that as a guarantee.

Considering even the “running change” versions of these figures use the original figure on the package itself, I would not be at all surprised if that’s what is being offered here.  I would hesitate to recommend people pre-order these blindly, but it might just be worth taking a chance, I don’t know.  Check out the links below to stock up!

Big Bad Toy Store

Keep in mind at BBTS, a few of the singles are already sold out, so going by the set may be your best bet.  Pretty inexpensive, too!  Check out my reviews for the original “Dollar General” G.I. Joe figures at the links below as well:

Discount store repaints hit eBay, and another hidden homage?

In a clear sign that these discount store G.I. Joe figure repaints are likely on the way to retail stores, eBay seller viperkingdom has posted them all up on eBay.  This second wave is full of some great homages to the classic Joes…some obvious, some not so much:

Now most folks have identified some of the clear inspiration for these figures.  Cobra Commander is based on his comic deco, while Storm Shadow uses T’Ginzu from Ninja Force as his base.  Duke’s interesting uniform color pulls inspiration from the animated Sunbow Breaker.

Shipwreck looks like a great OG13 base, and Snake Eyes looks to be based on the unheralded and extremely underrated Toys “R” Us Heavy Assault Set 6-Pack version from the new sculpt era.  But perhaps the most interesting here (and maybe the most overlooked) is the Cobra Trooper.

Many folks have identified the Cobra Trooper as having a comic inspiration, with the light blue and tan.  But it goes beyond that, at least from my view.  I’m sure folks remember those animated commercials way back in the day.  Well, the Cobra Troopers in those animated commercials look exactly like these figures, all the way to the blue mask.  It’s a very obscure and really neat homage for Joe fans who are interested in that type of thing.

I’ve mirrored the original gallery of images courtesy of Gyre-Viper from JoeDeClassified, and I’ve also included some low res images from those old school commercials.  I think the inspiration is clear.  Very cool stuff.

And below some very low resolution screen shots of those animated Cobra Troopers…notice the blue masks, blue gloves, and yellow straps?  Pretty cool.
