Amazing G.I. Joe print by Tom Whalen and Acid Free Gallery available at NYCC

Acid  Free Gallery has been spoken about on the site before, with some very cool G.I. Joe and Transformers prints that have been sold online and at conventions previously.

For NYCC 2013 a fantastic looking vintage themed print by artist Tom Whalen will be sold as an NYCC exclusive at booth 1779.  Celebrating the anniversary of the first G.I. Joe animated series we see an awesome artistic look at the G.I. Joe team, Cobra, and a great cameo by the MASS Device.

This is a heck of a great looking print, so if you’re going to be at the show, hit up booth 1779!  Chances are good it’ll be available online as well.  Keep watching the Acid Free Gallery Facebook Page for details.

The British Invasion returns – Boss Fight Studios infiltrates Roll Out Roll Call!

Even when official news from Hasbro is sparse, the best thing about an online community is the way we can all come together and form our own regional groups and have our own individual conventions to celebrate our fandom.

Across the pond, Dave Tree has been putting together an excellent show combining his love of G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Star Wars, and this year he’s adding some elements from Masters of the Universe and more.  Roll Out Roll Call is in it’s fourth year, and as always you can find it in Southampton at the Jurys Inn.

This year along with celebrated guests (including a few key members of the What’s on Joe Mind podcast) a few of the founding members of Boss Fight Studios will be making an appearance!  As you may or may not know, Boss Fight Studios is made up of several ex Hasbro employees and freelancers who have spent much of their toy design careers neck-deep in the G.I. Joe world.  They’ll be at Roll Out Roll Call doing sketches, live sculpting, and many other exciting events.

Along with this, they will have a special exclusive Roll Out Roll Call 4 print!  Based on the artwork from Marvel Comics’ G.I. Joe #1, this excellent exclusive art print is available primarily at the show, with extras hopefully available for sale afterwards.  Be sure to like Boss Fight Studios on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, and take a peek at their awesome exclusive art print below.  Also check out the Roll Out Roll Call page for all the latest and greatest information on the upcoming show.

New G.I. Joe: Battleground PVP Event – Nemesis Rising!

If you’re anything like me, you were wondering exactly where Nemesis Enforcer was throughout all of these recent Cobra La events in G.I. Joe: Battleground. Well, wonder no longer, as a new PVP (Player Vs. Player) event begins today, and features the one and only winged Cobra La enforcer as the first ever Legendary Rarity card.

See the full details below, including images from event cards. And how about that? Direct To Consumer Major Bludd?! Excellent. There’s been an infusion of DTC inspired cards recently, with Scrap Iron, Mutt, and Salvo, and I love seeing the obscure source material used in the game. Very cool.

DeNA’s G.I. JOE: BATTLEGROUND mobile game is launching a new Player vs. Player (PvP) event called Global Warfare: Nemesis Rising. This exciting event will run through October 4, 2013.

About the Event

With the defeat of Golobulus in Shanghai, Cobra-La’s resurgence seems to have been ground to a halt. Nemesis Enforcer has awoken but is now without a master to take orders from. Without Golobulus’s command, Nemesis Enforcer has become a wild card. As Joe and Cobra forces battle each other around the world, it has become clear that Nemesis Enforcer’s intent is showering destruction all around him until he can be subdued by a new master.

G.I. JOE: BATTLEGROUND will introduce its first legendary rarity card – Nemesis Enforcer! Battle other players and reach the very top ranks for a chance to get this powerful new unit to your squads.

Are you a New England based G.I. Joe fan? Join the Battle Force!

Regional G.I. Joe groups and conventions have been happening sporadically here and there, but are starting to become more and more common.  As official news from Hasbro themselves becomes harder and harder to come by, these regional groups have been banding together to enjoy the hobby in their own way, regardless of what’s happening at mass retail.

Throughout the past several years, there have been various groups of like-minded collectors from New England who have gotten together, but for the first time, a concerted effort to bridge the New England gap has emerged over on Facebook.

The BattleForce New England group had its first get together this past weekend down at Allora in Marlboro, MA and it was a blast!  There was good, lots of Joe nerd talk, a great trivia contest, and the event was capped off by some car-to-car trading in the parking lot.  There was an impressive turn out for the first meet up, and the promise is many more fun times to come!

We do understand that not everyone is on Facebook, so I will do the best I can to announce meet ups and events on GeneralsJoes as well so non-Facebook users can stay in the loop.  We want this to become a big event, and if the first meet up is any indication, there are some terrific times to look forward to ahead!  Check out some of the images from the first meet up below and hit up the BattleForce New England Facebook page to join the fun.

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 85 is online!

The G.I. Joe news front has been somewhat quiet in recent weeks, so some of the parts of Episode 85 of the What’s on Joe Mind podcast dip back in time just a little bit.  But then again some of the discussion here is timeless.  We speak to former Hasbro designer Rick Schad who gives us some great insight into his time on G.I. Joe, and of course, with it being episode 85, we pick our favorite figures and vehicles from 1985!  Vintage love for you.

Check out episode 85 at (or the embedded player below) and the show notes can be seen below.

G.I. Joe: Battleground Operation Takedown Event featuring Golobulus!

Our short break from G.I. Joe: Battleground events has now ended, and the awesome Cobra La story continues! So far we’ve seen Pythona and the Royal Guard…well this latest Operation: Takedown event showcases Golobulus, who is making his move to topple the world powers!

For folks who have been playing G.I. Joe: Battleground, the formula is familiar. Based off of various boss fights or rampaging boss fights, you use your reloads to battle iterations of dangerous Cobra villains (in this case Golobulus) as you navigate through a special map. Keep your eyes open for Mainframe and Stalker, as they provide massive bonuses to your attack power!

Check out a small gallery of screenshots below and fire up G.I. Joe: Battleground! Let’s take down Cobra La!

More clarification from Mike Costa on the end of G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files

G.I. Joe comic fans were blindsided this afternoon when IDW’s December solicitations labeled The Cobra Files as its “final issue”. Widely regarded as one of the fan favorite titles of the IDW universe, Costa’s “Cobra” title dips into the murky depths that many other writers have been unwilling (or unable) to approach. There is a certain depth and design to the Costa universe (which was developed thanks to the expert assistance of co-creator Christos Gage and artist Antonio Fuso) that made these characters feel more real and very deeply flawed.

Yes, this is a good thing.

Questions immediately arose today with the announcement of the title’s cancellation, and it turns out, everything is simply going according to plan. Mike Costa fired up his Twitter account and spoke out about the wrap up of G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files.

“Yes, the final issue of COBRA FILES is 9. That may seem premature, but I’ve been building to this for two years – long before the relaunch”

“I want to thank IDW and Hasbro for letting me end this run the way I always intended. And it’s not the last you’ll see of me in the Joeverse”

“Some characters’ stories will end FOR EVER. Some characters will show up in other books. Some of those books will be written by me.”

So it sounds like there are other plans for Costa’s characters and his writing throughout IDW’s G.I. Joe universe, and I suppose if the Cobra title had to end, I’m happy it ended on Costa’s terms and on his time table. Knowing what we do about Costa’s past work, its obvious he’s not afraid to make some waves with his story and his characters, so I think it’s safe to say we’re in for an exciting and bumpy ride over the next few months. A perfect conclusion to a terrific book.

IDW Solicitations for December, 2013 reveals the fate of the Cobra Files

Say it ain’t so!

Arguably the single best IDW G.I. Joe book since it first debuted, Mike Costa’s excellent book focusing on the seedy underbelly of the G.I. Joe universe looks to be wrapping up its impressive run in December of this month. IDW Publishing solicitations have been released, and confirmed within those solicitations is that Issue #9 will be the final issue for G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files.

This is a punch in the gut to many Joe fans who considered Costa’s work to be among the best the IDW G.I. Joe universe has been graced with over the past several years. Building a fantastic, gritty universe for our G.I. Joe and Cobra characters to battle in, Costa did what many have never dared to do. Take a somewhat outlandish and sometimes campy concept and turn it dark, dreary, and melodramatic, yet still retain the same sense of contained adventure. It was a very impressive direction to go, and Costa has been doing it nearly flawlessly for several years.

While that’s the headline of the December solicitations, there are many other interesting elements to that month as well (particularly Fred Van Lente’s last issue with the G.I. Joe flagship title). Check out the full solicitation list below.

Happy 30th Anniversary Sunbow G.I. Joe!

First and foremost, a big thanks to James McFadden for realizing this information and posting about it over on the Hasslein Books blog. It’s tough to think that it’s really been three decades since the first installment of the MASS Device hit TV screens everywhere.

I was an eight year old kid living in Plymouth, NH at the time and clearly remember those advertisements with Duke vaulting through laser fire and macking on Scarlett about his “green sheets”, and I was forever enthralled. While it would be Larry Hama’s immortal comics in the 80’s that fully captured my G.I. Joe childhood, the spark was ignited by the MASS Device and the Revenge of Cobra, and those two mini-series still stand apart as some of the best examples of 80’s animation in history.

Happy Anniversary to the Sunbow G.I. Joe series! I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that the next generation gets an equal chance to relive G.I. Joe magic through animation some day.
