Reflections on a Roller Coaster – the up and down ride of G.I. Joe: Retaliation

I’m not entirely sure why, but the topic of this post popped into my head rather suddenly as I really started thinking about the home release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  And in fact, I suppose it was the trailer that really did it.  I grabbed the trailer off of YouTube to embed it in my previous post about the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation on Blu-Ray and DVD tomorrow, and it started playing…

…that first few seconds of music and The Rock’s little speech?  Yeah, it took me back.  I think I must have heard those words from him at least a hundred times as I watched the trailer over and over again and did screen caps, and just basked in the wonder of the G.I. Joe sequel, still not entirely sure it was really happening.

And then it wasn’t happening.

That got me to thinking about the last 24 months and what a crazy roller coaster ride the G.I. Joe fandom has been on since then.  True ups and downs, and pretty much every single emotion in between.  I thought it might be fun to take a little ride down memory lane and peek at what it’s been like for the past two years and maybe, just maybe appreciate the exciting road we’ve been on, even if it wasn’t always that fun.  Click the Read the Rest of the Story link below to check it out.

The time is almost upon us… G.I. Joe: Retaliation is incoming on Blu-Ray/DVD!

Can you believe it?

How is this possible?  When the film was delayed for 9 months it felt like the end of the G.I. Joe fandom at large…but instead the film rebounded strongly and ended up grossing nearly $400 million worldwide.

Now we stand on the precipice of the home release, and any one of us will be able to watch G.I. Joe: Retaliation any time we want.  But that’s not all.  For folks who are interested in such a thing, the Best Buy exclusive “Extended Action Cut” will feature nearly 13 minutes of additional footage, giving many G.I. Joe fans the G.I. Joe: Retaliation film they were expecting in theaters.

One might think that 13 minutes of a 90 minute film really doesn’t make much of a difference.  I respectfully disagree.  I think most folks will find that the additional footage spent on sequences building up the major plot points of the film really help the film feel more cohesive.

Yes, G.I. Joe fans, the film hits all of your local stores tomorrow.  Are you excited?

Expect some interesting reflections and commentary once the film hits, as I dive head first into the Extended Action Cut and give my opinions on the changes and what the end result means for us and for the upcoming sequel.

I couldn’t be more excited!  Bring it on.

Meanwhile, make sure you check out the DVD/Blu-Ray Buyer’s Guide to figure out which version you’re picking up tomorrow.  Or in my case, which versionS.  Also, check out the review of the Blu-Ray theatrical cut with all special features right here on GeneralsJoes.

YoJoe and GeneralsJoes talk to David Phan, producer of G.I. Joe: Battleground

A short while ago, we were given the unique opportunity to send some questions along to G.I. Joe: Battleground producer David Phan, and he responded with some terrific answers about the recently released mobile game. He answered questions about characters, game mechanics, and revealed some very nice tidbits of what we can expect from the game going forward.

It was a terrific discussion. Check out the full interview after the jump.
