GeneralsJoes Reviews IDW Limited “Red Label” Complete Collection Vol 1

Thanks to the long hard work by guys like Mark Bellomo, Larry Hama and the talented folks at IDW, the Marvel era of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has never been treated better than it is being treated now.  Not just because of the fantastic Real American Hero title that is kicking ass every single month, but also IDW’s pure willingness to go back in time and collect every Marvel issue into one cohesive “Complete Collection”.  This Complete Collection includes not just the regular Marvel releases, but the Special Missions, Yearbooks, and even Comic Pack comics, all in chronological order!

Mark has poured his blood, sweat and tears into bringing these titles together, and it really shows.  But, you know, if you’re going to invest in a Marvel “Complete Collection” you might as well go all the way.  Along with their regular releases, IDW Publishing is also releasing IDW Limited Special Editions featuring the Marvel Complete collection.

I got my hands on Volume 1 of the “Red Label” edition of IDW Limited Marvel Complete Collection, and after I got done getting my mind blown, I wrote up a review.  Click the Read the Rest of the Story link below to check it out.

This Red Label edition of G.I. JOE: The Complete Collection Vol.1 comes with a full-color illustration by series artist Herb Trimpe. The book is signed by Trimpe, and Larry Hama and hand-numbered to 250. This collection of classic G.I. Joe tales has been packaged and presented in beautiful hand-assembled casing and re-imagined covers.

This is G.I. JOE like you’ve never seen it before. Presenting the full run of the original Real American Hero, Special Missions, and Yearbook tales, placed in proper reading order and collected in handsome hardcover volumes. Presiding over this project is legendary pop-culture aficionado Mark W. Bellomo.

One thing that has always interested me in the whole toy and comic hobby is the distinct difference between buying “product” and “collecting” something.  In my mind, collecting is about much more than merely going to your local department store or comic shop once a week.  There’s a certain amount of pride that goes along with items that you own and the quality and craftsmanship of those items.  G.I. Joe has always stood apart from other toylines because of the highest level of quality construction, articulation, sculpted detail, and design.  And that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I get my hands on the IDW Limited G.I. Joe: The Complete Collection.  “High quality”.

The thick slip cover is a fantastic touch with a really nice faux wood deco work and military style call numbers etched into the surface.  Inside the slip cover is a superbly well crafted leather bound volume collecting the first 12 issues of the Marvel Comics series, just as the standard Complete Collection is.

Speaking of the Complete Collection, Mark Bellomo puts everything he has into each page of each volume of these books, and the quality of his work is immediately evident in this volume.  A painstakingly written forward with information pulled from the mind of Larry Hama himself reveals new information in each volume, including some great tidbits from the original dossiers present in this collection.

The pages are all remastered with vibrant colors and excellent paper quality, feeling more like a high level publication and not a comic book.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that this particular volume collects issues 1 – 12 of the Marvel Comics series, which not only begins our Real American Hero adventure, but also introduces Dr. Venom, Kwinn the Eskimo, Snow Job, Gung Ho, and of course the entire G.I. Joe team itself.  Mike Vosburg and Herb Trimpe’s art explodes off the page with these new colors and crisp printing, easily the best quality I have ever seen collecting these issues.

This particular “Red Label” volume comes with authentic autographs from Herb Trimpe and Larry Hama, individually numbered and of the highest quality construction.  This isn’t just a comic collection, this is a high end collectible, and makes for one impressive item on your coffee table or in your bookshelf.

I give IDW Publishing all the credit in the world.  The Marvel era has been collected a number of different ways, but I’ve never seen or felt a collection quite like these IDW Limited volumes, and I’m sure the collection will look mighty impressive on you or your favorite comic collectors’ bookshelf.
