G.I. Joe: Retaliation set to break $100M worldwide opening weekend

Signals have been a little bit crossed throughout the past few days with nobody entirely clear what to expect from G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s box office numbers this opening weekend.

Variety’s most recent claim is that the film will break the $100M mark worldwide over the weekend.  Domestically it has already pulled in around $26M between Thursday and Friday, with most industry speculators assuming it will come close to or break $50M domestically.  While that is slightly behind Rise of Cobra’s $54M take its opening weekend, adding in the worldwide numbers, Retaliation actually comes out about $10M ahead.  Not bad, considering Rise of Cobra was a summer film and Retaliation is a March one.

With a budget of only $130M, you’d think breaking $100M its first weekend would bode well for the franchise, but with all of the marketing dollars, it is far too early to make any determinations.

Possibly the best news from all of this, though, is that Cinemascores from audiences seeing the movie are scoring in at an A-.  That’s not bad at all.

We’ll be watching.

  1. RISE OF COBRA was better in all respects. I find it laughable and bogus that the rightwing fans claimed that the film wasn’t true to Joe lore. However, ROC was faithful, complete with the anti-Bush International Theme. I had a problem with RETALIATION – it was more like Metal Gear than true G.I. Joe. Roadblock was fun; Colton was okay; the rest…..ehhh…. NIHILISM LEADS TO OBLIVION. Had the fan base gotten behind the ROC initiative, we could have had a better sequel. RETALIATION IS TOO DARK, AND SCALED BACK….what would it have been than to have a different team – led by Roadblock and Colton – engage Cobra Commander? That would have made everyone happy. Rise of Cobra cajoled fans to get the toys and vehicles…and was fun. RETALIATION is too dark; and since a lot of the “movie accurate” figures looked like the classic designs, there is no compelling reason to get Cobra Commander and a lot of the others. I got Roadblock; I will get a couple Ghost Hawk II vehicles; but since Cobra Commander, Firefly, Lady Jaye, Joe Colton all look like the classic designs, or reuse molds…WHAT GENIUS!!!!! No video game; no abundance of fresh stuff; no anime dvd side-release; you gonna tell me that RETALIATION IS BETTER THAN RISE OF COBRA? (LOUSY) NINJA PLEASE!!!!!!

  2. THE MOVIE WOULD HAVE DONE SO MUCH BETTER IF THERE WAS NO ATTEMPT TO DIVORCE IT FROM RISE OF COBRA. THE NANO WARS?! COME ON! Retaliation was a downgrade from the prequel; and Lady Jaye and Flint are poor stand ins for Scarlett and Duke.

  3. In all seriousness:

    1. I think I’m going to be DAMN close in the predict-the-box-office contest.

    2. The Easter long weekend kinda cancels out the time-of-year factor. And I think the 3D ticket price hike (and slight inflation) cancels out the wholesale audience rejection of the first movie and the stench that went with it.

All I have to say is that god that The Host flopped. Maybe Stephanie Meyer’s reign of terror is finally over.

  4. You’ve got it Geoff; it is hilarious when a franchise does the electric slide off a stage.

  5. Yes, having the number one movie in North America and one of the stronger Easter weekend weekends ever is such a disaster. Stop playing chicken little already and have some perspective.

And, incedentally, Rise of Cobra IN NO WAY “cajoled fans” to buy toys and vehicles. That line was a major money-loser for Hasbro.

  6. Rise of Cobra should have been called abortion of Cobra. There isn’t any cobra until the very end – and then he is captured approximately 5 minutes later. There were what, about 2 or 3 official Cobras in the movie? Commander, whoever was driving the Cobra Sub, and maybe Destro at that point. Cobra didn’t rise, they just kind of deflated. At least Retaliation actually had Cobra, not just MARS.

The flawed Retaliation was much better then ROC.

  7. I think you’re just trolling for fun and normally would ignore you but this line got my curiosity “rightwing fans claimed..” Is that just a hot button word or do you really have some reason to think critics of RoC where rightwingers? Cause I’m pretty far left (I even know the actual meaning of words like socialism!) and I thought RoC was a movie by Stephen Sommers that used some names from a toy line but that was about it.

  8. This movie was terrible (Slightly better than Rise of Crap) then catering to the lowest common denominator.Tons of plotholes, terrible casting and costumes.None of the Joes were regonziable at all.Of course it made some money, the Brain dead gladly dish out there money for mindless so called entertainment.

  9. I have been a longtime G.I. Joe fan, and ROC was faithful: you had The PIT; you had a cogent origin story of Cobra, which showed that Destro is a major part of Cobra, and not a third party player; Cobra Commander is a genius researcher and strategist; and as far back as the third issue of G.I. Joe, Cobra was using nano bots to assault the Joes. The ill will left internationally by the Bush administration basically demanded that the G.I. JOE force be a global entity. It lived up to Hasbro’s global marketing of the product since the 1960s. I say all this to destroy all those arguments that the ROC film wasn’t faithful. As for the Accelerator Suits – it was a fun addition to the JOE arsenal – this is the 21st Century; not the 1980s. THE G.I. JOE TEAM IS A RAPID DEPLOYMENT FORCE, IN A REALM OF SCIENCE FICTION. WHAT IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND? Now, Retaliation is just shy of a boondoggle. I am laughing, and laughing hard!! There is not even a highlight of G.I. Joe on http://www.hasbrotoyshop.com!! So, as a fan, WHO IS NOT TROLLING, I hope Bonaventura, Paramount, and Hasbro learn their lesson: pick a pioneering path, embrace the movie sheen, and go forth!!! This IS A TOY LINE, NOT A COMIC FRANCHISE!! Rise of Cobra was fun, Retaliation is a mess, attempted relaunches are sure signs of something short of success.

  10. That’s a lie and you know it. If anything, Hasbro is bedeviled by freaktards doing drugs and messing up their own lines. Instead of keeping it pushing with Joe vs. Cobra, they introduced Sgt. Savage; then Extreme the following year. What’s so funny is that the Red Ninjas, the Cyber Ninjas, and Alley Vipers were all in the ROC game; the Alley Vipers were the MARS SHIELD TROOPERS and the Cyber Ninjas were akin to the NIGHT CREEPERS. Hasbro shoots itself in the foot.

  11. Point out 3 plot holes, and why the movie was terrible because of them.

Why were the cast and costumes terrible. Explain your aesthetic values on casting GIJoe characters and costumes.

Next, tell me I’m brain dead again. Better yet, get creative. I liked the Retaliation, I must be brain dead. Call me something else, come on, your a good critic, you can do it.

  12. In ToyFare back around 2004, the producer outlined what he wanted for the first film, even mentioned Rex. The first film was Cobra’s origin, but goobers don’t get logic too well…

  13. Plotholes are as deep as potholes in Retaliation:
    1. Why did Zartan do what he did?
    2. Shouldn’t Zartan be far older?
    3. The whole railgun system is destroyed with one press of the “override” switch?
    4. THE NANO WARS!?!?!?!
    5. The Warden….knows all about Storm Shadow?
    6. The Blind Master’s statements…I didn’t know G.I. Joe was a firm fixture of the Arashikage Ninja Clan….
    7. No super soldiers for Cobra? The Cobras in Retaliation were real pussies…
    8. “I’M WALKING OUT OF HERE!!!!” … OKAY….
    9. HISS Tanks didn’t do too much
    10. Storm Shadow’s burns…STORM SHADOW SURVIVED THE FIRST FILM BECAUSE HE AND THE BARONESS WERE INJECTED WITH NANOMITES!!!!!
    11. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE ALL THE JOES WERE WIPED OUT IN ONE SINGLE SWOOP, BESIDES THE TRIO OF THE DESERT….
    12. HOW IN THE HELL DOES JOE COLTON HAVE ALL THOSE FIREARMS IN THE SUBURBS????!!!????
    13. WHAT ABOUT THE PIT? OR THE FLAG? DID THE PRESIDENT DE-FUND G.I. JOE???

  14. 1. Why did Zartan do what he did?
    —-What did he do?

    2. Shouldn’t Zartan be far older?
—-Zartan could be older. Zartan might not even be the Zartan we met in Rise of Cobra. We might not know what he looks like, but the un-masking flashback definitely adds a point to discuss.

    3. The whole railgun system is destroyed with one press of the “override” switch?
—-Not a rail gun system, you were not paying attention. However, I’ll agree that one press of a button destroys them all left me with questions. However, do I want to spend an extra ten-minutes of film laying out the technical directions for Zeus for the audience?

    4. THE NANO WARS!?!?!?!
—That sounds about right, the world is a big place and there may have possibly been other missions to clean up MARS mess, take down any stray Nano-Vipers, loose technology. What else would one call the Rise of Cobra premise, it was based on MARS having superior nano-technology?

    5. The Warden….knows all about Storm Shadow?
—-The warden was one mysterious character, I liked that guy. Here’s an interesting “black hole” prison type of set up that few people know about. I’d like to know more about that whole facility…., but do I want to spend an extra 15 minutes of film time learning about it?

    6. The Blind Master’s statements…I didn’t know G.I. Joe was a firm fixture of the Arashikage Ninja Clan….
—-The Blind Master may have had previous contact with the GIJoe team, perhaps He and Jinx had worked with the ‘Joes before? Here’s a whole background to explore, but, that could add another 15 minutes of film to the mix….

    7. No super soldiers for Cobra? The Cobras in Retaliation were real pussies…
—-Cobra is back to basics. I think a “boss” type of Cobra character would have been kind of neat to see, like after all the normal troops were taken down, in steps like, Drago, to give Flint a run for the money. If there had been super soldiers, we would need Serpentor to lead them, or Venomous Maximus.

    8. “I’M WALKING OUT OF HERE!!!!” … OKAY….

    —I don’t understand.

    9. HISS Tanks didn’t do too much

    — They really didn’t. This last action scene wasn’t a favorite of mine. We know that Joe Colton and some friends were doing something, but, no matter how you lay out, this location is where the POTUS and world leaders are meeting. I would suspect SUPER security within rings around the place. Perhaps the HISS tank crews didn’t know what to do with the little tank nipping at them? I would say this was one of the weaker spots of the film.

    10. Storm Shadow’s burns…STORM SHADOW SURVIVED THE FIRST FILM BECAUSE HE AND THE BARONESS WERE INJECTED WITH NANOMITES!!!!!

—- Was Storm Shadow injected with nanomites? I don’t think that was ever show on film, however, it could be speculated. Storm Shadow is an anger-fueled ninja, and if he has the mental control to slow his heart to medically dead, these ninja must have some serious mystic mojo going on.

    11. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE ALL THE JOES WERE WIPED OUT IN ONE SINGLE SWOOP, BESIDES THE TRIO OF THE DESERT….

—Me, too. If I remember right, they couldn’t raise HQ for communication before the attack. HQ, or the pit, could have had an assault at the same, or prior. Cobra might have gained surprise entry there, but there are probably levels and hidey-holes where Ripcord is safely waiting for the next film in a currently buried bunker.
As well, Snake Eyes was not one who was counted among the 3 voice signatures that Cobra analyzed. There could be ‘Joes all over the world spread out, but possibly being hunted by Cobra forces at that same time. We don’t know.

We don’t hardly know exactly how many GIjoe troopers were killed in the (Pakastani?) desert, how many were there, or except for two, who they were.

It was like a green shirt massacre to me, something that one would see in the cartoon back in the day. Troops running all around, and they all look like Grunt.

    12. HOW IN THE HELL DOES JOE COLTON HAVE ALL THOSE FIREARMS IN THE SUBURBS????!!!????

    — Real life military people often have at least sidearms in their homes, even after leaving the service. There are real life groups of non-military who have stockpiles of weapons out there, too. I would like to spend another 25 minutes on film finding out what Joe Colton does for a job, and how put all those weapons in his home.

    13. WHAT ABOUT THE PIT? OR THE FLAG? DID THE PRESIDENT DE-FUND G.I. JOE???
    — Nobody knows about the pit, and the (Flagg?) doesn’t exist in RoC that I remember? Zartan probably did a lot as President to screw with GIJoe.

Don’t forget, just a handful of GIJoes seriously messed up Paris in RoC, and how there were no civilian deaths reported during that debacle is a point to debated strongly. I would think any international cooperation, although successful for the most part in RoC, would make many GIJOE member countries rethink GIJoe. I mean, why would another country want to allow GIJoes to run around and cause a ton of damage like they did to Paris?

Perhaps the international community didn’t recognize the threat of MARS, and defunded GIJoe, leaving the U.S. to be the only GIJoe proponent after RoC?

  15. I understand that Cobra wasn’t the main threat. But in the first movie Cobra was all of 3 people and all were captured at the end after about 5 minutes. That isn’t a rise. That is not even getting off the ground! There was NO Rise of Cobra!

  16. the movie did have some holes, some mentioned above, Scott I think you did a good job explaining several of them. If Zartan was the President it’s highly possible he assisted in scaling Joe down. France was upset with the Joes, perhaps other countries, combined with Zartan’s middling saw Joe scaled down to an American only team. It could have been explained better, I hope everyone can i agree to that , like it or not, we relied on a lot of knowledge of the past movie and the history of the joes to understand it more fully. As for the flagg, their is an Air Carrer at the end of ROC, but it may not have been the flag.

  17. “The Warden….knows all about Storm Shadow?”

Shouldn’t he? The only two prisoners he’s watching are known associates of Storm Shadow. Presumably, he’s briefed on who’s likely to show up to make a rescue attempt.

“No super soldiers for Cobra? The Cobras in Retaliation were real pussies…”

Presumably the technology to create more of them blew up along with the Antarctic base, or had more to do with Destro than Cobra.

“HOW IN THE HELL DOES JOE COLTON HAVE ALL THOSE FIREARMS IN THE SUBURBS????!!!????”

    America, that’s how.

  18. The timing issue’s a legitimate, but ultimately meaningless complaint. Zartan expressly says that he’s been President for a couple of months. That happened at the end of Rise of Cobra. So in the intervening months, Duke and Roadblock became best friends, the Joes were drastically re-organized, the “Nano Wars” happened, the President made enough decisions to spike his approval rating, and they had enough time to build a prison in Germany that was apparently specifically for CC and Destro.

  19. Um… Hasbro has to release their financials as a publicly-traded company. Their CEO called the Rise of Cobra pricing strategy a “big mistake” (the higher-priced items barely moved), and a lot of the late-year product that was shipped after the movie’s disappointing performance found its way to discount chains since it wasn’t lapped up at retail.

“Freaktards doing drugs”? I think you should be looking in the mirror given the tone of your comments.

  20. Even if this movie wasn’t connected to g.i.joe (which isn’t much of a connection) it solo isn’t a good movie…choppy and boring. None of the characters are recognizable or respectful to their source material. People are just so excited to have a joe movie I think it’s clouding their judgment. And theyre scared if they don’t like it they won’t get another one! If you like it, great! I’m glad for you but I can’t agree.
