Larry Hama’s ringing endorsement of G.I. Joe: Retaliation

There are few people who’s opinions I would respect more on the subject of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero than Larry Hama.  As the architect of the entire run of vintage Marvel Comics, and a healthy share of the action figure filecards, Mr. Hama has had his fingers in the G.I. Joe realm for more years than many people have been alive.  He’s often said that he based all of these characters off of real people and as such they are like friends and family to him, and he takes their representations pretty seriously.

Larry had a chance to see G.I. Joe: Retaliation tonight, and he has posted his opinion on his Facebook page.

By and large, it sounds like Larry really enjoyed the film.  He kindly refrained from posting spoilers, but he spoke about the characters, the plot, and how he felt the cast and crew did taking what were pretty much his personalities and personas and putting them to film.  He approved of the actors for the most part, and applauded the “physical action with people” rather than an over-abundance of CGI.  It seemed like a very honest, thoughtful, and real perspective on the film.

There will be folks out there who say he’s probably “shilling” for Paramount, but I’ve known Larry for many years.  I consider him a friend.  That’s really not what he is.  He’s very much a “tell it as he feels it” kind of guy, and if this is what he put out there, this is how he feels, and I think many G.I. Joe fans will sleep better over the next 9 days considering the words he put down.

For folks who aren’t on Facebook, or who aren’t Friends with Larry, I’ve pasted the full text of the review after the “Read the Rest of the Story” link below.  I think folks should check it out.

A barrage of interviews and behind the scenes footage from G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Kudos to the eagle eyes of Skinny from Serpentors Lair who stumbled upon a great amount of G.I. Joe: Retaliation related videos on YouTube.  These videos have been uploaded to the  B &  H Film Distribution YouTube channel and contain some great interviews and some really awesome behind the scenes battle sequences.

This is really some great stuff, everyone should check it out.  There are a number of videos, so I’m going to post them all after the jump, but you should check them out, for sure.

Thanks to Skinny for the heads up.

Exclusive G.I. Joe: Retaliation clip from MovieFone shows Duke’s harder side

Over at MovieFone we have another G.I. Joe: Retaliation clip featuring Duke!  Channing Tatum’s character has been somewhat elusive and the source of many questions over the past few months, so it’s interesting to see an entire clip focused purely on him.  There is some cool new footage scattered throughout, though.

EDIT: Some script problems were killing the MovieFone Clip.  Here’s a clip straight from Paramount International of the gun scene:

If you want to check out the MovieFone one, with additional Tatum-speak, hit MovieFone.com.

GeneralsJoes Reviews G.I. Joe Kre-O Checkpoint Alpha and Serpent Armor set

G.I. Joe Kre-O week continues with a look at the Checkpoint Alpha build set and the Serpent Armor vs. VAMP build set as well!  I was struggling a bit with how to review these, since I really don’t have a Lego background, but some friends of mine just advised that I review them as a G.I. Joe fan would, so that’s kind of what I went with.

You might notice I’m ironing out some of the review kinks.  I don’t have box images or sticker images necessarily…some of those will come later.  I was battling an eager 7 year old who wanted to jump right into these things.  So you can either check out my G.I. Joe Kre-O Review Page, or the direct links below:

The TOP TEN. Within 10 days of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and reason #10 to see it

Holy wow.  The TOP TEN.  We have broken 10 days, G.I. Joe fans.  The film looms above us coming up at the end of March, and it’s tough to believe that we’re already only 10 days away.  Twitziller keeps the momentum going with one of the key scenes from the first trailer.

It’s amazing how spot on Twitziller is with some of these things and how you don’t really think about it until he mentions it.  Not just that, but it’s equally amazing that the film makers were able to latch on to key elements of the G.I. Joe mythology and technology this way.  Because he’s exactly right, motorcycles have always played a huge role in the G.I. Joe mystique throughout the years.  From the RAM to the Silver Mirage, and all the way up to the Venom and Ninja Cycles from Valor Vs. Venom.  Even if motorcycles don’t get much use in a “real world” military setting, they are simply too cool to ignore, and fun as heck to play with.

Firefly’s Cobra motorcyle is a bit unique of course, and by the looks of things can only be used once in its explosive capacity.  That sort of crazy, out of the box thinking is what makes the Cobra technology so cool.

“Hey Destro… make me a $100,000 motorcycle that turns into missiles and EXPLODESSSS!”

“Yes, Cobra Commander…”

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 75 – Listener call in extravaganza!!

Well, we loved it so much we did it again!

In celebration of episode #52, we offered listeners a chance to call in and talk with us directly about their burning G.I. Joe issues, and the response was incredible.  We all had a blast doing it, so we figured to celebrate our diamond anniversary of episode #75 we’d do it again.  I think we’re all glad we did.  It was a raucus, “from the hip” whirlwind where we eschewed news and current events and just leaped into talking with YOU, our listeners.  Joined by good friend Erik Arana, who provides some great insight into our hobby and the toy industry in general.

Because there wasn’t much in the way of news or intel, the show notes are just below.  You can find the episode on Podbean, or via the embedded players below.

It’s our second ever listener call in show!  We put the news, email, and Twitter on hold and take your calls and answer your questions!  Show friend, Erik Arana hangs out with us and gives us a unique perspective on our hobby.  If you don’t know who Erik is, you need to listen in!  Special appearances by WOJM contributors Eduardo M Freyre (with a lemon twist), Ryan Costello, Jr. WOJM Twitter laureate, Twitziller, Noted Author, James Kavanaugh, Jr. and Numbers from Ages 25 and Up.  It’s a festive, from the hip episode where the only thing that matters is taking your calls…and making fun of Chuck.   Enjoy!

Cobra begins their global domination… from orbit!

Now this is just too cool.  Jim Sorenson dropped me a line to let me know that his partner in crime on the G.I. Joe Field Manual(s) Bill Forster has launched Cobra Commander into space, and recorded the event for prosperity.

Check out Jim’s post on Disciples of Boltax with Bill’s first hand account.  And of course, we gotta hit up the YouTube video below.  Hopefully he didn’t bring any Lunartix back with him…

Art of G.I. Joe Exhibit – Phoenix, AZ on March 23rd

If you’re in the Phoenix, Arizona area, I would strongly recommend checking out the upcoming Art of G.I. Joe exhibit at The Collector’s Marketplace!  There will be several artists and authors there, all with G.I. Joe ties.  But that’s not all… Paramount Pictures and the Cobra Special Forces promotional team will also be there with give aways and advanced screening tickets.

You should definitely check out the G.I. Joe vs. Transformers Facebook page for all of the latest information, but if you also click the “Read  The Rest of the Story” link below you’ll see the full release, listing all of the artists and other creative G.I. Joe geniuses that will be there.  Sounds like a very fun event!
