GeneralsJoes Reviews BBTS Exclusive Falcon, Mercenary, Zanya and Zandar

Florida Everglades.  0330 Hours.

“Come in!  Dammit, someone respond!”

Falcon slammed his radio against the nearest tree in disgust as Mercenary roamed over his way in a low, stealthy crouch.

“What’s goin’ on, LT?” Mercenary inquired as he drew close enough to talk in a whisper.

“Wish I knew.  We’ve got flamethrowers, sniper fire, and I just heard at least half a mag of 5.56, but nobody is responding.”

“Well…if no one else is gonna take the fight to ‘em, might as well be us.” Mercenary gestured his head towards the direction he had come from.

“Explain.”

“Saw Zandar over that way.  He took cover after all hell broke loose.  I was ’bout to jump him, but figured I should get your say so first”

Falcon nodded and crouch-walked past the Renegades Mercenary, lifting his tactical shotgun out in front of him.  He couldn’t help but glance at the Cobra-issue Viper rifle that Mercenary still toted around from his past time in the Cobra Viper corps.  Falcon would be lying if he said he was totally comfortable with it.  But the Renegades were totally off the grid.  He could direct them, but had no say-so about their gear load out.

Falcon and Mercenary pushed through the brush as silent as possible, but stopped suddenly when they saw what appeared to be a young girl looking very worried at the surrounding chaos.  Flickers of flame shot ribbons of light throughout the thick woods, but they could still see the silhouette of the girl, but not much in the way of details.  Mercer used hand gestures to ask permission to proceed and Falcon nodded.  His face turned into a sneer as he set down the rifle, pulled out a pistol, then screwed on a silencer.

Slowly he pressed forward, reaching out to the young girl with a consoling hand.  Before he could bring her in to protect her from erupting gunfire, she whirled around and drilled him in the temple with an elbow, breaking out in laughter.  Mercenary stumbled backwards, squeezing off a trio of silenced shots, but they went wide even as the green-haired girl in the Zartan t-shirt pulled out her own large caliber Magnum.  Two thundering blasts rang from the thick barrel, glancing off of Mercenary’s appropriated Alley-Viper body armor as he stumbled to the ground.  Even though the shots were not direct impacts, breath exploded from his lungs and he was gasping as he dropped into the grass.

Zanya sneered and moved in, her pistol training on the fallen soldier, but Falcon was right in her path, lifting his shotgun.

“Don’t do it little girl –”

But before he could finish, an arrow drove deep into his right side, sending blood spraying from his lips and staining his green uniform.  Zandar leveled his crossbow and loaded another arrow.

“Did you forget about me, G.I. Joe?  That’s okay… everyone does.”

Regarding Falcon, you said it best with this comment:

“I would have loved a more direct focus on the vintage style, or a full-blown 30th Anniversary heavy-duty update, instead it seems like we got something that was a little bit of both, but not enough of either.”

I hate his belt-that-won’t-stay clasped, too. Or lower jacket, rather than belt, I suppose. I’m going to use his head (most likely sans beret, and not as Falcon) and sell the body in a lot of fodder. Still, that side-by-side with Anniversary Falcon, one of the worst Anniversary figures ever, makes him look like a Poppies Figure of the Year (Low Light is nominated this year, incidentally).

    Zandar:

They nailed this one, but any nostalgia I ever felt for the garish color scheme faded long ago, so once again I’ll probably use the head (as a crazed, tribal, “gone native”, inexplicably clean-shaven Outback, perhaps) and sell/trade the body.

Zanya and Mercer are awesome, awesome, awesome. And the fact that I’ll be getting this Zanya makes it much easier to deal with the disappointment at not getting a Zarana; I don’t care about Zarana, but this mold is so awesome that I wanted the Cold Slither variant to treat as a new character, but frankly, Zayna looks much cooler. I love her head sculpt!

By the way, the Zanya link from the main page takes one to the Zandar review, bro.

I think the reason why I favour the Marauders set is that whatever’s wrong with the figures largely boils down to accessories, rather than any issues with the figures themselves. Well, outside Bull… stupid Recondo.

But with Falcon – don’t like the blue beret, just order a black one cheap from Marauder Inc. (… ironically enough…) Everyone’s got tons of better weapons lying around if you don’t like what Red Dog comes with. Etc.

I’m still in shock they made a Zanya figure. If they ever make a Heartwrencher I might name my next kid Hasbro.

I can’t help but notice Falcon is missing the red scarf he’s been pictured with. That probably would have helped break up the plainness of the upper torso. It seems like a pretty stupid thing to cost cut.

  • Erik

It was included in the one that Phil reviewed at YoJoe.com

Great job on these reviews! When I first saw the packs it was the Dreadnoks set that I was really excited about (a chance to finally round out my classic Dreadnoks?! Sign me up!), and I liked the figures in the Marauders set so why not? However your reviews have me absolutely salivating at the thought of the Marauders set!

I need to do something with Falcon though. His original figure was one of my favorites as a kid. Maybe take the bandana from the 25th Falcon, Jungle Strike Duke’s body (to keep the Jungle theme), some misc. webgear and the Marauders head? Worth a try.

  • Erik

I’m planning on using the Zandar head on a POC Zartan body. POC Zartan is an awesome figure but he doesn’t really work as Zartan for me. I think if you put the Zandar head on there and use Zartan’s vest he’ll look like a updated, more serious looking POC style Zandar.

  • Ryan

Well, here’s hoping it comes in the set I’m getting. Nothing worse than getting a figure with missing stuff, IMO. It’s one of.the main reasons I don’t buy too much stuff online.

  • Gigamach

Thanks for the reviews. I’m completely in your camp on the Devil’s Due stuff getting the shaft in the “fandom”. I really like what they did, and revisit the comics a lot. As for the DD Coil…hells to the yes. I’d love to see them as, oh say, the convention set this year? Yeah, I said it…

  • Erik

How would the Marauders Falcon look with the 25th webgear?

  • ero

For sure! That scarf is much needed. I’d been curious as to whyJustin had been leaving it out in the picsfrom other reviews. Guess he didn’t get one. What a bummer.

  • TheFallen

You stated in the Zandar review that the knife on the leg is removable. Looking at the pictures it certainly does not look removable.

    Can you please clarify, Justin.

    Thanks

  • Ihatebees

I’m pretty sure that is the 25th Tunnel Rat knife sheath, and unless something has changed it is not a removable knife.

  • M6D

It’s not in the picture of the boxed figures. I guess Justin got “Dusty’d”
