GeneralsJoes reviews G.I. Joe: Renegades Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes

When it rains, it pours!  Hot on the heels of the 30th Anniversary Wave 1 figure releases, Wave 2 arrived in my mailbox!  Not wanting to waste any time, I immediately started taking pictures and getting the reviews wrapped.

You can check out the reviews on my 30th Anniversary/Renegades Review Page, or just hit the links below:

  • That Snake Eyes looks cool. I like him much more than I feel like I probably should. That said, I hate the weapons; are they unpainted, or just painted a poor color? Bummer about the lower arms, but I’ll grab him anyway, methinks. Assuming he’s available for cheapish next summer.

Cobra Commander is pretty wicked from the neck down. The lack of articulation is disappointing, but not surprising; any time a character has something like a trenchcoat I expect hindered articulation.

Neither head does much for me, but that’s partly because I’ve still only seen the pilot episode of the show.

Great reviews, sir. Thanks as always for providing window shopping opportunities for the Joe nerds overseas.

  • I’m glad these figures are coming out because it means I can take a break from buying Joe figures. :)

But I can understand the frustration about the accessories, especially since the packaging lists a bunch of parts that the figure don’t come with! What’s this “Bio containment claw?” “Sword rack?” “Grappling hook?” Sorry kids, hope you didn’t want those.

Fan of both here. Except for the lack of painted weapons, I think these are pretty cool. CC in particular, though I’d love his paint apps to match the packaging more, which would have made him a better fit with pretty much everything else. That said, Resolute CC is my Joe Universe cannon CC, so I think this guy will be someone else with that half-covered face. Not sure where he’ll fit yet…

Nice reviews. Best thing about getting the two heads with CC is that now we FINALLY have a good one to use for an IDW CC custom, and Renegades CC will still have a cool head he can use.

Great point. I think the helmeted head is a great candidate for an IDW version.

Yeah, accessories definitely went mysteriously MIA which sucks, especially since they were mentioned on the filecards. In these instances, I don’t think the actual missing accessories were that big a deal, but in future waves I hope we don’t see the same thing happening. I fear we might.

Thanks, Monte! The weapons are, by and large, unpainted. Another cost cutting measure I think we’ll find going forward. We got so used to absolute excellence with the Pursuit of Cobra, this is going to be a tough adjustment. Don’t forget, only a year or so ago, weapons were all monochromatic…

  • Gigamach

Yeah, but make ’em black if nothing else. The blue swords are ridiculous and look cheap.

  • RID Scourge of Cobra Island

I don’t have cable so I haven’t seen Renegades. The only one fom that wave I’d probably pick up is the Commander because he’s very different. I dig that.

Yeah. I never found a PoC wv 3 Snakes. My favorite version is the RoC wv 1 version though. I like the musculature on the figure. The Renegades version uses a good mold, but a mold I already have twice (City Strike and the Target Exclusive Rescue Mission). It’s hard to get excited about Snake Eyes figures these days. I’ve got so many of them. I’d love to see something new. A look that’s different but plausible for Snake Eyes.

  • Agreed, if everything is black I don’t mind. That said, I do hate when a backpack features grenades and such and it’s all monochromatic.

I like how Snake Eyes looks. My one disappointment, without having the figure, is the apparent lack of ankle pivot. I know that Scarlett was show with that point of articulation but I thought all the Renegades figures would have them.

I always loved the look of the City Strike Snake Eyes, but I never opened mine. So I wasn’t at all bothered that this Renegades Snake Eyes shared so many parts with CS SE. But what I am bothered by is his arms. Asside from the problems with the elbow articulation, they are also disproportionate, with the upper arms being too small compared with the lower. I suppose they’re really not TOO bad, but…for me, this would have been a really really nice figure, and just what I was looking for, if only the arms were better. Pooo…

As for Cobra Commander–well, I’ve been back and forth in my opinion of the figure. One thing that has consistently bothered me is the “skirt”. On mine, the hemline along the bottom isn’t parallel with the ground, it angles upward to the figure’s left side somewhat. Also, I think it’s just too large and stiff. Perhaps it would have been better for it to be about the same length as the “skirt” portion of Firefly’s coat, and made of a similar soft rubbery plastic.

The rest of the figure has been growing on me though. Unfortunately the half-mask head is too small, but the full mask head looks much more proportionate. I’d have liked to see a darker blue on him, to match more closely with the cartoon and card art, or, if keeping the lighter blue, than at least darkening the grey of the boots and gloves to give a better contrast against the blue.

Basically, I can’t help feeling that there was a potentially great figure here, but that potential wasn’t quite fulfilled.

Pretty cool figure. I think I would use his half mask on one of my POC commanders to get a better feel.
