G.I. Joe: Renegades figures have landed… my first reaction

Several years (and about a hundred and twenty pounds) ago I was a soda addict. I drank soda pretty much every day on a pretty consistent basis. I made a decision one day, and stopped drinking soda, probably about 10 years ago now.
Well, every once in a while, I get the urge, so I have a drink. Sometimes Coke, sometimes Ginger Ale, sometimes Root Beer. Just something I need to quench that craving. When that liquid first hits my lips, I am in love. So sweet, so refreshing, so satisfying… and then it hits my gut and goes totally sideways.

That pretty much covers my feelings about the G.I. Joe: Renegades figures.

Make sense?

I didn’t think so.

I have been exuberant in expressing my love for the G.I. Joe: Renegades property, pretty much since day one. I’m an eager consumer when it comes to the Joe brand, and when new media is out there (whether animated or live action) I get myself ready to jump right on board. And since we’re talking about G.I. Joe, when new media comes out, well… of course new toys are going to come out, right? Of course.

Well, not so much.

See, the fantastic G.I. Joe: Renegades series was summarily canceled many moons ago, and the series actually had its finale in early July. So of course it makes perfect sense for the first figures to hit retail in late September, when kids are back in school, and nobody even remembers that a G.I. Joe animated series was on television. Yeah, I’m a bit bitter.

Where does this whole terrible soda analogy come in? When I first saw the packaging, it was like that first sip of Barqs, or on those rare occasions, Dr. Pepper. So sweet, so refreshing… and then I remember the series is canceled, these figure releases are temporary, and we’re likely not even going to see Destro, The Baroness, or even Roadblock for crying out loud. And that’s when it goes sideways.  That’s when it hits my gut.

But you know, I’m going to try like heck to review these figures on a more objective basis, taking them piece by piece instead of getting mired in the depression that is the G.I. Joe: Renegades brand.  So, anyway, stay tuned.  I’ve got two more 30th Anniversary reviews coming up, then hope to get Renegades hot on the heels.  Should be a lively series of updates over the next week.

It hurts my soul that there will not be a Baroness figure. She was the face of Cobra for the majority of the series and her design was amazing. Thanks, Hasbro!

What happens when the 2012 JoeCon set is Renegades?

I find the nearest GIJCC staff member and give them a kiss full on the lips.

I pray that a Flint and a LJ will make it out. These figs are fantastic but I agree it is very bittersweet.

So Justin, do you think that it’s completely out of realm of possibility we’ll see a Renegades 7-pack next year (the next 7-pack after the speculated Dreadnoks set) ala’ G.I. Joe Resolute? I’d hate to lose that bad-ass Destro design.

I hope some more Renegades figures make it out. I wish they didn’t feel the need to abandon everything when a movie’s coming out, since the last time they put out movie figures they had to spend a long time to return the Joe brand to stores. We got some great toys because they had something to prove, but the very long hiatus is not something I’m anxious to repeat.

Its like Resolute all over again. Put the toys out a year after the cartoon came out. Don’t advertise or market them in any way. But don’t worry, the movie is going to sell a gazillion dollars worth of product!

These figures are so skippable. What a boring lot.

I still bet that the series comes back after the movie with an active GI Joe team, and they’re no longer “renegades.”

If you think these figures are passes I’m not sure what will make you happy. What figs are you excited about?

I got mine the other day, i was not a fan of them, CC is too cartoony, I like Duke, Duke look like kind of like law enforcement with his grey and blue, the head is nice, Firefly and SE is okay but there are better ones out there, If your not a renegade fan, I would skip them,

With RENEGADES ending with the Joes turning themselves in with the evidence to prove their innocence ,and COBRA Industries own evil agenda. Plus having internet COBRA bombthrower Breaker part of General Abernathy’s team. And the Commander crawling out of the wreckage post-M.A.S.S. Device destruction, saying, “This means war.” I’m guessing we’ll be going into a next stage dealing with Cobra no longer having to be covert in their actions. Much like TRANSFORMERS went from Armada, to Energon, and ended with Cybertron in the UNICRON TRILOGY. Maybe that’s going to be Hasbro’s big announcement this weekend at the New York Comic Con ?
