G.I. Joe: Retaliation influenced by “The Rock’s” positive impact

So when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was first announced as being one of the stars of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, I saw and heard fans complaining.  Claiming that he was just an ex-wrestler with no real star power, and that he really should not be involved in the Joe film.

There were people out there who said his involvement didn’t make any sense and that he wouldn’t bring an ounce of credibility to the G.I. Joe film franchise.  As time has gone on, those people have relaxed somewhat, but they are still out there.  And to those fans, I just have to say “look at the numbers”.

Dwayne Johnson posted the first apparent “in costume” picture of himself as Roadblock about 60 short minutes ago.  Along with Twitter he also posted it on Facebook.  An hour later, the image has almost 2,700 comments, and nearly 16,000 “likes”.  As a whole, the Facebook page for Dwayne Johnson himself has a whopping 4 million fans who like it.

Contrast all of this with the original G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which currently as 15,000 likes on its own, and its easy to see that a thriving social media empire and a likable personality can combine to create a LOT of buzz.  The Rock will put butts in seats, and the G.I. Joe sequel can use as many butts as it can possibly get.

This doesn’t even mention Jon Chu and Ray Park, both of whom are very active on Twitter as well.  Something tells me this somewhat younger and fresher perspective might just drive more box office dollars.  Regardless of your opinion of the G.I. Joe film franchise, this is a good thing for all of us.

Possible first in costume shot from G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Where the hell were we before the days of Twitter?  Even only two years ago, we were huddled by the web just waiting for Paramount to officially release those press pictures of the Joes lounging around in their spandex “Reactive Armor”.  Now, all you need to do is follow Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on Twitter to get what appears to be (maybe) the first in-costume and in character picture of Roadblock from G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

The Tweet simply reads “1st day of shooting. 110 degrees. Bring It. #GIJoe” but the image says a thousand words.  Sporting a high tech flak jacket (that almost has elements of the old reactive armor in it), camouflage pants, knee pads, and his trusty M249 Squad Automatic Weapon at his hip.

Bad ass.  Be sure to follow The Rock on Twitter to keep up to date as shooting continues.

Rumor Alert – G.I. Joe: Retaliation to feature appearance by Falcon?

Up to this point we’ve heard nothing about an appearance by Falcon in the new G.I. Joe sequel, but sources are telling me that Falcon’s name has been floating around cast lists down in New Orleans.  Time will tell if this info is accurate, but another interesting twist in what is sure to be a roller coaster over the next 11 months.

Whatever you do, keep your eyes peeled to GeneralsJoes.com for the latest intel and information on G.I. Joe: Retaliation!

G.I. Joe Collectors Club reveals more subscription details on Facebook

Many questions have been posed leading up to the G.I. Joe Collectors Club eventual release of information about their subscription service, and the GIJCC has gone to Facebook to answer some of the more pressing concerns.  Hit up their Facebook Page and “like” them to follow the news, as of this posting, they’re only one away from 4,000!

The info reported is as follows:

  • THIS is the Facebook page for the OFFICIAL G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club which is operated under license from Hasbro, Inc. We also operate GIJoeCon which is the ONLY official G.I. Joe Convention.
  • The official website for the Club is www.gijoeclub.com.You are not a member by liking this Facebook page.
  • Officer Level Members (paid) get a monthly magazine and a free figure each year they are an active member. Members also receive special pricing in the online store and free use of the MCAX auction site. There is also a Members Only message board.
  • The Club will soon be offering an add-on service to Officer Level Members which will be a Figure Subscription Service. This will be an additional charge to your paid Club Officer Level Membership.
  • The Figure Subscription will be 2 carded figures shipped every month for 6 months for a total of 12. Subscribers will receive a 13th figure FREE at the end if the subscription period.
  • Figure Subscriptions will only be available to Officer Level (paid) members for a limited time. After the cutoff date, no more subscriptions will be sold for that period of figure mailings.
  • The Figure Subscription and Club Membership are TWO different things and you MUST be an active Officer Level member in order to be eligible for the Figure Subscription.
  • The 12 figures will be known when the Figure Subscription window opens, but the 13th figure will be a secret. (We hope.) Don’t tell when you get yours! :-)
Okay, of course the most important information listed above is that you must be a paid Officer level member of the Collectors’ Club to take part in the subscription.  That was assumed, I think, but not known 100%.  Along with that, we find out that all twelve figures will be known before the sub window opens!
They also mentioned that they hope to start the window for subscribing “in a few weeks”!  Great news all around.  Looking forward to more intel, and thanks to the GIJCC for answering some of these pressing questions.  If you want to get a head start and join the club now, hit up this link to do so.
