Rumor Alert – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to play Roadblock in G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes?

Hrrmm.

Well, he’s got some name and some star power, but certainly isn’t making the sequel seem any more credible from an artistic sense.  Of course, I suppose anyone who thinks a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is going to have artistic sense will be in for an ultimate disappointment next summer anyway.

Both Variety and Deadline Hollywood (who likely got the news from the same place) are reporting that not only is Dqyane Johnson in talks to be in the film, but he’s very likely to be playing heavy machine gunner and gourmet chef Roadblock.  Although Heavy Duty had been the Joe’s requisite heavy machine gunner throughout the first part of the 21st Century, over the past few years with Resolute and Renegades, Roadblock has taken his place back amongst central G.I. Joe characters, which certainly pleases a lot of fans out there.

While he certainly is no Terry Crews (sorry Brian Truitt…) he does lend some star power and muscle behind the sequel.  It will be interesting to see if this comes about.

Big thanks to snakeeyes566 of HissTank.com for spotting this nugget.

So I presume that Roadblock’s first dish will be some form of pie?

I can accept it. If Ripcord can be black, why can’t Roadblock be…not black?

Now cast Tommy Lee Jones as Spirit and Bill Murray as Quick Kick and that’s a picture I will see day one.

I jest. Seriously, I can accept it if true. In before hate storm (shadow).

  • Marc from Canada

Wait, so there’s a chance The Rock will be layin’ the smackdown on some Cobra jabronis? Awesome.

“I can accept it. If Ripcord can be black, why can’t Roadblock be…not black?”

His father was Rocky Johnson, who was basically the blackest man alive. Your point?

@Sven – My point is strictly in regards to appearance and pre-conceptions on the characters and who people think should play them. Take ‘er easy there, fella.

Also – Rocky Johnson looks like he’d a made a Picture Perfect Roadblock.

lol @ any GI Joe movie being “artistic”

I love the Rock, and I love most of the movies he has been in. He is actually giving me a reason to look forward to this next movie.

    Some star power?

My wife and all her friends go to the theater just to see this guy, no matter what he’s in. If we’re talking family and/or action movies, this guy is big news. I can’t see him playing second fiddle to Channing Tater-head” Tatum though. The Rock stars in the films he’s in, even when he joined the already established and successful Fast and Furious franchise in Fast Five he was given equal screen time and billing next to Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. So does that mean Roadblock will be the head honcho on the field?

And while I actually like The Rock and his action films, I would of MUCH preferred an actor with much blacker skin to play Roadblock. But what the hell, they already screwed everything up with the Ripcord stunt in ROC, so why not this? At least adding The Rock will put people in theater seats, unlike Wayans who scared them away.

Oh, and Sven said : “His father was Rocky Johnson, who was basically the blackest man alive. Your point?”

Take a pic of Roadblock and put it next to a pic of The Rock. If you don’t undertsand why some diehard fans won’t be happy with this choice after that, then you never will.

Me, I’m okay with it. Like Justin said, after RoC we are prepared for certain “anomalies”.

I’m kind of glad that I don’t, actually. He’s a black guy, and he’s also Samoan. Good enough in my books. Should be good enough for most sane people.

Also – he takes a few supporting roles. Think Get Smart / Be Cool / (shudder) Doom.

    Agreed, dude.

Don’t forget his small role in “The Other Guys”.

I think “the Rock” will be awesome in that role, if it’s true. He’s got a good sense of humour that will fit Roadblock and the movie. And definitely bring in people.

“The Rock” isn´t only white, but he´s short (very shorter tha Brendan Fraser, i.e.).

G.I.Joe Part 2: “We fucked it up again.”

  • DT

Well I personally absolutely love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and I would LOVE to see him portray a GIJoe on the big screen, but I dunno if he’s Roadblock material.
Terry Crews or Bob Sapp would definitely look the part far more.

But, if he is Roadblock, I will still purchase his toy, repurpose him as someone else and be giddy as a schoolgirl that The Rock is now part of my Joe team.

That being said… you guys ARE aware that Dwayne Johnson is half-black and half-Samoan, yes?

  • Matt Cargile

I’m going to go on record as saying that this is actually pretty awesome news. Will he personify the classic Roadblock? Probably not, but you could cast him as Lady Jaye and he’d still be engaging in a way that Channing Tatum’s mumbly emo Duke will never be.

@alvarobm Both Brenden Frasier and The Rock are (supposedly) around 6′ 3″, which is enormous in Hollywood. :)

I like this. I liked him in The Scorpion King. Enjoyed Walking Tall. LOVED The Rundown. The kiddo even liked him from that Disney Football movie he was in and his various cameos on the Disney Channel shows. Now for every good flick he was in, there is another DOOM out there, but I am not too worried about that. I think it will be great and he is funny to boot. And let’s not forget about the possibilities with toys here too.

  • http://jlurevisited.wordpress.com Sven

@crosshair – yeah, Bill Simmons and Adam Corolla were joking that Vin Diesel must have been standing on milk crates in order to look anything close to Rock’s size. Most Hollywood actors, even the “big” guys, are tiny. If you passed, say, Jason Statham on the street, you’d never look at him twice. Rock and Fraser are two rare exceptions to the rule (as was Christopher Reeve).

brutal….and i thought they where going to take Franchise more serious this time. Good Grief!

“If you passed, say, Jason Statham on the street, you’d never look at him twice.”

I literally have (at Comic Con) and the guy stands out. Just sayin’. ;-)(Cool attitude, too, that Statham, at least in public)
