Bittersweet Symphony – The Final Days of G.I. Joe: Renegades

Well, the date is now semi-official.  July 23rd will mark the end of Season 1 of G.I. Joe: Renegades, and likely the end of the series entirely.  MSNTV has posted an update to their G.I. Joe Renegades schedule, and this is how it is all laid out:

  • June 11th, Episode 21 – The Anamoly
  • June 18th, Episode 22 – Cutting Edge
  • June 25th, Episode 23 – Cousins
  • July 9th, Episode 24 – Going Underground
  • July 16th, Episode 25 – Revelations, Part 1
  • July 23rd, Episode 26 – Revelations, Part 2

And there it ends.  All twenty-six episodes, and the series should just be wrapping up for the final time right as the toys are available on store shelves nationwide.  If that isn’t a brilliant marketing strategy, I don’t know what is.

Yes, that’s sarcasm.

Without going too deep into it, the obvious and utter disregard for G.I. Joe: Renegades is completely and totally mind-blowing.  The total indecision, unwillingness to commit, and eagerness to end it before it even began will be something that I never completely understand.  I’ve been collecting these little toy men for going near on thirty years, and I’ve seen quite a few business choices that made me scratch my head.  In all fairness to Hasbro, many of those have worked out for the company, even if I didn’t agree at the time.

This one, though?  I just flat out don’t get it.  Building an entire network around essentially a small handful of corporate owned animated properties, and essentially decided to kill Renegades before it even really started.  Blaming the upcoming film, when they knew all along that the film was coming out in this timeframe, yet didn’t seem remotely concerned about it when they started the series in the first place.

G.I. Joe hasn’t had animation on television of this quality since the 80′s, and Hasbro essentially shuffled it under the rug before they even really gave it a chance to succeed.

A shame.

Ah, well.  I’ll be enjoying the next run of episodes nonetheless.  And I’ll be loving the toys.  But a big part of my faith in Hasbro took a hit with this one, and even though upcoming toys are looking awesome, it’s going to take a lot to win me all the way back.

Didn’t they already confirm the show is coming back after the next movie? Your posts about the show always seem so “OMG its the end of the world DOOM!!!!” They’ll probly run it again twice over the next year and then continue the storyline after the movie push is done.

  • GQ Monkee

As far as I know, Hasbro has not confirmed the show will be coming back. I’m sure “a” show will be coming back, but cancelling renegades is a mistake, and I’m terribly afraid that Hasbro will abandon it with the next incarnation of the show. This, in my mind, is the best film adaptation of the property ever. Would I like to see less goo soldiers? Sure. Humans fighting humans would be nice, but the story telling has never been better, and There’s a good chance Big H is going to kill it just when the real Joe vs. Cobra aspect kicks in.

  • Kenny

I couldn’t have said it better man. I feel the same way. Will never understand this decision.I truly hope Hasbro figures out their plan before their next animated try. Long live Renegades!!!

  • Ann

I hope that renegades will show in Russia.

  • revsears

agreed, and sadly this is a repeat. Reslue was the same way, the majority figs came in the 7 packs well after the show. Even with the movie, major movie chars that appeared in the trailer, like destro in the suit, just didn’t show on shelves. It’s really cause me to have a negative view of Hasbro when it comes to Promoting Joe. they can make great figs, but they don’t seem to able to help them sell.

  • revsears

oops resolute , not reslue, trying to type while yelling at my cat is not productive.

  • Hunter

Yeah, while I was never the biggest fan of Renegades, it had grown on me. It seems rather silly not to at least give it a second season, even if it is a short one.

Hopefully when they said it would come back after the movie, they were being honest.

And I really REALLY wanted some of those toys. While I didn’t really LOVE the artstyle or anything, the toys looked pretty cool. And I really wanted a Dr. Mindbender figure because I don’t have enough scientists in my Cobra.

    Oh well.

  • Pat

Couldn’t agree more. If this truly is the end for Renegades, it really seems like a huge mistake. In my opinion, they captured everything that is cool about G.I. Joe with this series. The build to the end of season one has been excellent. Sadly, that makes the apparent demise of the show even worse. Seems like season two would’ve been awesome. Renegades has/had so much great potential.

@Hunter: Most of the characters are getting figs I think. What Hasbro already confirmed is that ”animation” is resuming after the movie and that it will have the same characters as Renegades. So, that is probably going to be the plan for toys after the movie toys are done. Let’s hope the new animation is as good as Renegades! And as Kenny said, Long Live Renegades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gyre-Viper

@Benjamin… When Hasbro says hiatus… Itz historically a prophecy of cancelation. Justin is simply and fairly speaking from experience.

  • dersham

I sort of know how you feel. I think I’ve come to expect less and less from Hasbro so it doesn’t quite bum me out as it does you. It is a shame. They’ve finally got their big fancy marketing tool out to get kids all excited about joes, but then they cancel their show rather than show off more fancy toys that makes us fans go “dang, I want that”. I guess Hasbro likes to shoot themselves in the foot. Though I do wonder how well action figures are selling in this day and age with kids, what with video games and such. Renegades has been a step up from the original cartoons (I know I’m a blasphemer for not liking the original cartoons), and they managed to bring in lots of joes just under the vise of not being part of the actual G.I. JOE organization. As with others have said, Long Live Renegades!

I totally agree man, this is so sad to see hasbro really communicate in their actions on what they have planned for the renegades property, and in essence how they regards the Joe’s. I’m not putting my faith in the movie after hasbro doing something like this. Especially with how we love resolute and then the movie which was well, speaks for it’s self. I don’t get it, do they even listen to the fans and what the fans want? Or are they too caught up in my little pony and the bots? Renegades is amazing!! I really really really liked it…Hasbro has left me with a bad taste in my mouth this time with the time honored Joe mystic. Very unfortunate for them.

  • Sam

It would be nice if they could release any figures with something resembling a marketing strategy. I can’t find any Joe figures around me (unless I want arctic Destro) and don’t even get me started on Star Wars. Oh well, it helps out my wallet. As for Renegades, it’s really just par for the course.

  • Dusty Ayers

I hate to admit it but Gi Joe is a distant third behind Star Wars and Transformers. Hasbro treats it that way and so do the retailers. The big box stores shrink Joe aisle space and sometimes completely get rid of it. That kind of thing will never happen to SW or TF. In most TRU’s those two properties have an entire aisle between them.

  • M6d

In a land with Marvel figures and movie lines, Transformers and Star Wars… The sad reality seems to be that GIJoe just isn’t that important enough of a brand to be given a full focus for any amount of time.

Just hope we get those Kwinn, Lifeline and Sci-fi figures.

Exactly. As much as it sucks to admit, G.I. Joe just isn’t a “major” property. Kids aren’t buying it at all with only a relatively small adult contingent spending money. All one has to do is look around adult toy collector forums to see this. A G.I. Joe collector usually also buys Transformers and/or Star Wars and/or Marvel, but a typical Transformer/Star Wars/Marvel collector rarely buys G.I. Joe.

I remember the great hiatus that followed the Valor vs Venom line. Many thought it was the end of all joe at a time when there were no Hasbro Q/A’s to quell the storm, just a report every once in a while.
What was sad is that the last figure to emerge from that was the venomizatiion chamber maximus. But they obviously took that break to do some amazing things for the line (Sigma Six, DTC-which kinda sucked cause it was online only but we got some pretty amazing stuff)
I’m sure Hasbro is going to come back with renegades after it works over the movie- which i hope is better than the first.

Canceled or not, renegades left behind a good series.

Personally, I must admit I was a little disappointed in the G.I. Joe fans for not really getting all that excited about this. I’m member of a couple of Joe message boards, and I was suprised how little the show was discussed. Few seemed to care. I mean, it’s not the exact G.I. Joe we know, but it’s a new variation that used established characters in some interesting ways.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we get a new series that can at least be someone considered a sequel to this series. You know, the Joes are cleared of all charges and a new, familiar version of the team is created, or something.

  • bob

So Justin ever since we got in a fight years ago I have never been a fan of how rude I think you were, but what you said here I could maybe not have been able to say any better;) It really will be a dark day in the history of G.I. Joe, Foolish maybe but I am trying to keep the faith that this cartoon or another version will be back after the movie but I guess only time will tell:(

I have enjoyed GI Joe Renegades immensely. I have awaited each episode with baited breath. Yes, it was a little A-Team (maybe a lot A-Team), but it has such great characterization and action. It has been a breath of fresh air after the last big series, Sigma Six (Resolute was good but not as good as Renegades and only a one shot after all). I have enjoyed it a lot more than the other Hub headliner, Transformers Prime. And like others have said, much better than the original 80′s series. Yes, it had iconic moments, particularls the first couple 5-parters. But it was so silly. I always found the 80′s Transformers Cartoon to be more enjoyable than the GI Joe cartoon.

I was always a transformers fan first, GI Joe fan second, until Revenge of the Fallen. I enjoyed Rise of Cobra so much, I’ve switched over to GI Joe. Yes, believe it or not, that converted me. And Renegades has been great. And now it’s ending before we get a bunch of cool toys. It’s all backwards. What happened to making the toys and cartoon at the same time, or the toys first at least? Now the show will be over and there isn’t even a toy on the shelf. Even Transformers Prime has been suffering from that, but at least they get another season. It’s too weird.

I at least hope they make a Roadblock figure so we get the main crew. He’s the only one without a figure shown yet. And more bad guys would be good too. Lady Jaye, Flint…

Darn it, I wanted a Coyote vehicle toy! Look at all the potential!

  • Kurt_eh

Sad to see it go, but at least the Canadian distributor has caught up to the Hub. Hopefully we’ll be getting the final episodes the same week, and not 3 weeks later as it’s been all year.

  • Tom

I took my time thinking of what my reply to this would be. I’m typically supportive of Hasbro – aside from all the stuff I’m ‘supposed’ to like as a Joe fan, I also enjoyed Eco Warriors, Mega-Marines, Sgt. Savage, Valor Vs. Venom and Rise of Cobra. I am what you could consider ‘a mark’ – yes, put a “GI Joe” logo on a piece of shit and chances are I will buy it.

However, I can still recognize greatness when I see it. GI Joe cartoons have never been ‘great’. The Sunbow series, the DiC series, EXTREME and Sigma Six… awful, if only in a ‘I can’t watch this with anyone else’ kind of way. “Renegades” however was above and beyond anything we’ve had before – I would even offer it to a budding fan before the original comic series. To know that it is 99.9999989% cancelled offends me on a level I rarely feel – it’s almost a sense of betrayal in some way… or defeat. Like I let myself believe in something and it was crushed before my eyes – a burning flags, crumbling ramparts, GERMANS STOMPING AROUND THE WHITE HOUSE kind of defeat. : (

When the writers said they had ‘years planned’ for this series, I scoffed. No GI Joe series lasts – especially knowing how Hasbro treated “Transformers Animated” a year or so prior, I knew ‘fan reaction’ didn’t matter so much as whatever new media angle they’ll be working in a year or two. So I KNEW not to give them a chance. BUT I DID. And this is the reward.

I swear – the next series Hasbro tries to launch, I will not watch it. I will not give them a second of my time. I will void it from my life, like I do the IDW comics. It’s not hard. I will not watch the EIGHTEENTH explanation of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow’s relationship. I’m done. I’m tapping out. Thanks for all the fish, I’m through.

  • Kurt_eh

    Sorry, gotta vent.

    Really, TeleToon Canada, really?

You were officially caught up with the episodes as shown on the Hub, and instead of showing “The Anomaly” you go all the way back to a rerun of episode 3, “Rage”

And you wonder why Canadians are flocking away from your network and towards other means of getting the show?

  • Dean

I’m very very disappointed to hear the cancellation of Renegades. I was so ecstatic when I found out about this show and now after one awesome season it is going to be cancelled? Is there some way we can round up all the GI Joe fans to get them to not cancel the show. What I like about Renegades is their focus on a few characters, mainly Snake Eyes, Duke and Scarlett. I think these are by far everyone’s favorite of all time. The old GI Joe had too many characters and each character only got a few seconds of airtime. I like how they show Duke and Scarlett’s relationship grow and even how Duke has started trusting and liking Snake Eyes. This is a disappointing story. I’ve had over several hundred GI Joe action figures and this show helps me relive the good days of when I was a kid. We need to find a way to keep this show going.
