Another indication of future G.I. Joe packaging change?

The guys over at The Terror Drome have come across an overseas auction, which apparently features a pre-production box for the upcoming G.I. Joe vehicle line possibly appearing on store shelves this fall.

First thing you can’t help but notice is that the logo and overall blue color scheme are very reminiscent of the Firefly packaging we saw a while ago, which lends more credence to that being something official.

Besides that, I wouldn’t take much from these images, since they are obviously so early in the production phase.  Hopefully we’ll find out more in six days at Toy Fair!

Hmmm… it looks like the VAMP name is switching sides then.

Cool! I assume this is just a placeholder vehicle and that this is the packaging for that new Vamp we saw not long ago. Looks like they’ll be matching the generic Transformers packaging they are moving to, likewise moving Joes into a generic G.I. Joe packaging rather than anything movie based for either of them.

Alexx- I don’t think this is for the new Joe GP vehicle- That thing looked about Bravo sized, and these are clearly alphas (There’s also a Thunderblast/Armadillo on the account there), and the presence of the Cobra Logo in that name tag makes me think that it’s for a Cobra vehicle.

  • Alexx

Ah, missed the Cobra symbol there! Well, I hope they aren’t randomly passing this off as a Vamp for some reason now.

  • DistantFred

Well, the Armadillo is in the same box, so they may just be placeholders put into the box to check how well various Alpha trays fit into it.

That said… this is likely a new, possibly smaller Vamp, that is quite likely a bit different previous ones because it is now a Cobra vehicle, and because the Vamp/Stinger mold is a bit too big to fit into the Alpha price point.

You guys are missing the point. This isn’t about what vehicle goes in the packaging, its about the packaging itself. The important part is the new logo design.

I don’t like the gray background on the borders of the packaging. The blue card we saw a few weeks ago was great contrast to the new silver logo. But I’ll wait and see the final product before judging it. But I like the generic look of it so far. Just recognizable enough to know its Joe but fresh enough to “reboot” the brand. Hopefully we’ll get a good look at it at Toy Fair.

I hate that silver logo. It’s so bland. There’s no ‘pop’ to it. The lack of color almost makes it look like a knock-off.

Can’t say I’m crazy about the return of more window packaging either. Never understood why retailers think those help sales. Stuff just looks so odd shoved in sideways into a too-small box. Plus, the half-assed applied factory decals.

I want some nice dedicated artwork on the front of a closed box with a nice clean picture of the enclosed product on the back. For theft purposes, hologram stickers sealing the box ends and a printed cellophane shrinkwrap around the outside.

yeah I think just like there’s a small hiss and large hiss… there’s gonna be a small Vamp and a large Vamp.
which leads me to expect/suspect a larger arctic cobra vehicle to go with the smaller one as well.

I wonder if they’re going to re-release the Stinger. They’d be dumb not to.

I’ve seen tighter stuff come out of the youngest design students locally…after a night out downtown.

You know what this design reminds me of? The 1990-1991 packaging. It had blue under the G.I. Joe logo, kind of like this.

Whoo hoo! Old school Joe logo! Could use more color, tho…
