Where can a guy get some cheap sandbags?

posted in Dio-Stories, G.I. Joe |

So I’m continuing my work on my various sets for the upcoming Darkness Falls dio-story, and in the COBRA Foyer, I want 1 or 2 gun emplacements by the far door.  Well, in order to make up some emplacements, I want to get some sandbags.  Now, Build-A-Rama has some terrific looking sandbags in stock, but I really can’t bring myself to drop $30-40 on sandbags for a couple of emplacements that’ll be used in only a couple of scenes.

Anyone have any ideas?  I know Power Team Elite’s got some, but I can’t find any online anywhere.  Not sure I want to buy the Wal-Mart Outpost Defender just for the sandbags either (since neither Roadblock nor Tripwire does much for me).

Any ideas out there at all??

How about the hollow Hasbro sandbags from one of the sets from the 80′s. I don’t remember the set, but I’ve got a bunch that you can have if interested.

Check with Marauder John. He doesn’t have any in his store right now but I know he sells the individual PTE ones. Drop him an email and he might be able to help you out.

An idea I’ve been wanting to try myself: make them yourself ! Since you’re building your own sets, this should be feasible. Take plaster cloth, model it around small paper props, apply a tan or olive drab base paint, touch up with a darker shade. Done !

Chap Mei had some fixed sandbag positions with their soldier force series of toys, alternately you migh want to take a look at the cheap toy soldiers as some of them come with plastic sandbag posts which could be worked on into being more realistic

A friend of mine created some for a diorama out of Chiclets gum. They’re a little small, but they’re cheap. Painted tan and brown they look pretty good. The gum is a little hard to find, though.

Squadron hobbies has a product called miliput, which is a hobby putty. You can make your own sandbags with that. Wargamers and diorama makers have been using it for years.
